I don't want to start another of the incendiary debates I've seen on forums, regarding Bob Fitzsimmons' heritage. So, discounting him, who was the very finest English fighter? I'll say Ted 'Kid' Lewis, by quite a margin. Any thoughts?
(By the way, as an English boy myself, I'm as big a fan of our recent heavyweight champ as the next man... But if anyone says Anthony Joshua, your PC or handheld device may self-destruct) hehe
If Wales is considered as part of England (and I'm genuinely unsure of that and not trying to cause any angst to anyone) then I'd give Jimmy Wilde and Freddy Welsh a shout out as well as Joe Calzaghe. Otherwise Jack Kid Berg deserves a mention alongside Benn, Eubank, Lennox Lewis, Ted Lewis, etc etc... England has produced far more than its fair share of fantastic fighters for its size.
Kid Berg has a decent shout. And Lennox if he's considered English. As for Kid Lewis, check my original post
M Turpin is a legend. My grandfather sparred with him. Closest thing I have to a claim to fame there is a statue of him down the road
Well, if it's the greatest H2H English fighter then Joshua could possibly be the second greatest after Lennox Lewis though at this stage of his career, the jury is still out. Tyson Fury might yet prove to be having an edge over him in a possible matchup.
Tyson Fury will never make me forget great contenders like Owen Moran, Nel Tarleton, Alan Rudkin, Eric Boon, Boy Green, Ernie Roderick, Herol Graham or Len Harvey. We could definitely expand this list.
Good point. He beat the 41 year old Klitschko. He needs to beat the 87 and a half-year old Ortiz. Then he's done all he can with that generation. In the new generation he needs to beat Wilder (to shut people up) and Parker (for form's sake). Next up... Let's see. Dubois? Joyce? Some random up and coming Eastern European? He can only beat the fighters in his era. Think (and hope) he'll do so. Then let's talk
