Terry Flanagan has moved up in weight after a frustrating reign as a lightweight world champion.

The WBO king, who had five defences of the crown he won back in 2015, had the move confirmed by the sanctioning body on social media on Thursday.

Flanagan (33-0, 13 KOs) recently said that a deal was “all but done” to fight Jorge Linares, the WBC Diamond champion at 135 pounds, but it has now been confirmed that the 28-year-old will campaign a division north at super-lightweight.

According to the WBO, ‘Turbo’ enters the rankings at 140lbs in the number one position for a title which is currently still officially held by Terence Crawford, despite it being common knowledge that the Nebraskan plans to move to welterweight.

That means that Flanagan could well fight for the title, in a vacant capacity, in his next fight. Maurice Hooker, the NABO champion, is also rated highly, while the Inter-Continental and newly crowned British champion Jack Catterall and Jose Zepeda who Flanagan won the lightweight belt against over two years ago are also in the top five of the latest rankings.

Whats so frustrating about getting Jorge Linares to come to the UK ?

Terry sees the easy vacant title.

Terry’s title run was a joke, he will struggle at 140 because he doesn’t pack much power at lightweight.

WTF could have been so hard about getting Linares finalized? Jorge fights anyone and has a track record of fighting in the UK. He's got a reputation among the promoters as being quite reasonable and easy to work with.

No offense Turbo, but I'm not buying what you're selling here. If the fight fell through, it's his team that dropped the ball.

How do you go from fight nearly done to vacating and moving up in weight.

    That makes no sense.

Flanagan is big for 135 but even if he struggles making the weight you think he'd do it one more time for Linares.

140 is weak so he should pick up a title against the correct opponent.

He's fighting Maurice Hooker for the title, who is not particularly good. Perez beat him and Hooker was only saved by blatant robbery.

disappointing... instead of testing himself he sees 140 has less better fighters so wants a free title.. unless he REALLY struggles to make 135.. then I understand.... but if he doesn't then this is sad and I hope hooker beats him lol.

I feel you but I dislike Hooker myself so don't want him to win a world title.
