In the 1st couple rounds, Dempsey comes out bobbing and weaving trying to get inside. Holmes' jab doesn't agree with those plans. He uses the jab to keep Dempsey on the outside. He has reasonable success in doing so. However Dempsey notices a fatal flaw, when Holmes throws his jab he always leaves his left down by his sides instead of using it to block punches. Dempsey still decides to take it easy until the time is right. None the less, every time Holmes throws a jab, Dempsey goes over it with a viscous right.

In round 4. Dempsey feints a right, and catches Holmes with a huge left staggering Holmes. Holmes tries to clinch but it's of no use, Dempsey gets out with ease and hits Holmes with a straight left knocking him off balance then hammering him with a lethal right. Holmes goes down, the round ends. Holmes is saved by the bell.
In round 5 Holmes, who's still hurt keeps his distance. He starts boxing a much more ferocious Dempsey who's eager to finish the job. Dempsey is seriously getting outboxed here.

In round 6: Dempsey throws a right misses, and is met with a huge left. Staggered, he tries to retreat to the ropes. Holmes follows him and hits him with a furious storm of rights. Finally Dempsey goes down. Much like when Ali got up in TFOTC, everybody is shocked. Holmes continues to go after Dempsey looking to finish the job, he puts Dempsey on ***** street yet again. But the bell rings to end the round. This time it's Dempsey who's saved by the bell.
In round 7: Holmes has gotten more comfortable. He starts exchanging more with

Dempsey. Dempsey has now decided the time is right. Holmes who has not fixed his issue with dropping his left when throwing a jab, throws it again. This time Dempsey goes over with a viscous right that would knock most fighters out. It only staggers Holmes. Holmes goes to the ropes. Dempsey follows him and hits with 2 lefts to the body and a huge right upstairs. Holmes goes down. The crowd is again surprised as Holmes gets up yet again. This fight has developed into a classic. Holmes who's leading on all scorecards, is just trying to survive the round. Dempsey knowing the end is near, moves in for the kill. Holmes is trying to stay away from Dempsey. Dempsey cuts the ring, and eventually closes in on Holmes. Dempsey unleashes a viscous combo consisting of lefts and rights to the body. Holmes in one last blaze of glory tries to finish off Dempsey with a huge combo. He hits Dempsey with a huge left jab and follows it up with 2 lefts and a right. He throws a huge right cross that will surely finish the job. It narrowly misses as Dempsey counters with a huge left hook, followed by a huge right uppercut from hell. It knocks Holmes out cold.
    Dempsey KO7
However both fighters stocks are raised after this fight. Holmes chin is especially praised despite the KO, which nobody would've got up from.

Tough fight, but I think Holmes prevails. Dempsey's bread and butter punch was the left hook, Holmes nemises was the right cross

So Brennan lasts 12 with a prime Dempsey but Holmes only makes it 7. OK.

Or Dempsey circles Holmes waiting for his window to pounce but Holmes jab and feet never give him the opportunity he wants. Sooner or later, an increasingly softened up Jack has to force the issue against a large, very fast heavy with an ATG jab and real punch variety, which only causes matters to further turn in a southerly direction. He at last tries to rough up Holmes on the inside only to find out that Holmes is no shrinking violet, quite strong and no stranger to the rough stuff. Dempsey soldiers on until beat to a standstill and saved from further damage. Round 9.

FFFFFFFIN' awesome dude. I wonder how many fans know Dempsey was Tysons main hero? He cut his hair like him, the scowl, even the name. Iron Mike is what Dempsey called his right hand. Great fantasy fight!

Brennan went 12 rounds in 1920, which being a year after Willard I thought might qualify as "Prime Dempsey".

Holmes puts on a boxing clinic to a fighter known to have trouble against non stationary targets.

Yes, true he went 6 rounds in 1918, which qualifies as "Prime Dempsey" too.
Let's say the 7 rounds for Holmes (mentioned here by the OP) equates to 14 rounds in the return match then !
Or split the difference and call it 9. :)

(I notice the first Brennan fight conveniently gets overlooked a lot.)

Holmes has all the tools to neutralize Dempsey`s strengths. I know Jack was had dynamite in his fists but I can`t see him getting to Holmes who is bigger and also the better boxer. He knew how to tie a man up and keep the fight on the outside with that jab and the cross. I think Larry could walk Dempsey in shots and eventually stop him. The type of puncher that Holmes was he could cut Dempsey around the eyes with quick slashing one-two`s

Cannot see Dempsey getting the beating of Holmes, Holmes was a clever boxer, he would be taller, heavier, just feel he has the tools to have the win over Dempsey.

But with the Manassa Mauler in the ring it would be a exciting match up.

Very tough fight to call. My gut goes with Dempsey via TKO

Dempsey has never seen, or faced, a fighter with Holmes's talent, skill, chin, will, punch variety and size.......and Larry Holmes is not a nice guy, he is as mean as they come and will fight dirty in a heart beat if he has to.

Straight out of a time machine Dempsey gets stopped, guaranteed.

    Holmes with long straight punches.

Dempsey never gets into the fight.

I doubt it lasts 8 rounds.
