It is not an easy fight to call, since Burns is open to a bit of interpretation. I think that a lot would depend upon what weight it takes place at. Obviously Tony would have to be favored at middleweight. If it takes place north of 175 lbs, then the argument starts to shift in Burns's favor. The smart thing would very likely be to favor this smart economical attacking fighter, over the somewhat inconsistent Mr Toney.
He was juiced to the gills. Seriously 'roided up. To the point where he couldn't even pass a fight day test. Twice he failed, at least. A "fat, underpowered former middleweight" you say. Yes, that's all fine but he was carrying plenty of drug-enhanced muscle and power at heavyweight. So let's not pretend he was just a fat little guy chancing it. He was on serious 'strong boy' gear, high doses most probably, all the way up to fight night. He is a punch drunk defensive master. He was so slick he got hit too much Doesn't quite compute. A good fight but overrated.
The first failure was a doctor prescribed steroid to help him recover from a arm injury sustained in his last fight. The second time was because his pituitary gland shut down. This content is protected James entire training regime consisted of ONLY SPARRING. According to the HBO commentary team James sparred something like 400 rounds just for the Jirov fight. He was a slick defensive master because of it. He is punch drunk because of it. The list of names he has sparred with are absolutely frightening too. Names like Gerald McClellan, Wlad Klitschko, Tommy Hearns and too many more to list. Every trainer he's ever had said James sparred like a madman. It showed in the ring and unfortunately, it shows now.
Well this is a fairly easy pick to make. Burns easily handles Toney he would be far to brutal in power and fleet footed. People are just blinded BC he was 5'7 and 170 /180 pounds , chances are he would be HW champion today ppl just have to come to grips with that notion.
