Hearns vs Ray Robinson @ welterweight: Is there any hope for the Hitman

We all saw the first match between Leonard and Hearns and Hearns was ahead on the cards and out boxing Leonard. Many think he lost because he cut too much weight which weakened him. Assuming this is not the case vs Robinson, could Hearns prevail?

 

Yes, there is certainly hope for the Hitman. He could potentially prevail against any welterweight or junior middleweight.

 

With a great like Hearns there is always a chance and with his right hand? Oh yeah, and some guys who beat Robinson were not as great as Hearns. Robinson would have to be sharp to stay away from the right hand. Tommy a little more experienced than when he fought Leonard would be better. The Hearns who beat Benitez or knocked out Duran would do well with Robinson.

 

Hearns biggest weakness was not his opponents. It was him.. He liked to go for knockouts and entertain and he left himself open. He became a puncher as a pro, when he was a boxer in the amatuers. He was 155-8 and only had about 8 knockouts.. When he learned to punch he really went for it and left himself open. A cautious Hearns could have beaten anyone but had a less exciting career.

 

Anyone with Tommy Hearns talent and skills will have a chance. He was a once in a lifetime fighter himself. I just think Sugar Ray Robinson has a more well rounded game. Sugar Ray had just as much power and he was more durable. Hearns best chance would be to box and not go to war. He was such a warrior though he usually fell to the temptation.

 

Sugar!!! You're talking 35 years era difference and?...you're talking welterweight.

Hearns has a chance against any Welterweight who ever lived. He for me is the hardest hitting 147 ever and the most explosive. His power has led to unexpected explosions against ATG chins that were never cracked prior or later like Duran, so nothing is out of the question.

SRR is the greatest Welter of all and would have to be favored. He is only marginally under Hearns power and has an incredibly rounded offense and takes a good shot as well. He might be the greatest fighter ever.

 

Most likely Robinson knocks him out.

 

boxing history is interesting. The older the fighters the easier it is to win. Hearns and Leonard and Duran and Hagler knock out Mayweather and Delahoya, and Robinson and Lamotta beat Hagler,Hearns,Leonard and Duran. I think if the fights really happened there would be some surprises.

 

Robinson was the best ever, probably.
It has nothing to do with him coming before Hearns.
Hearns was great but Robinson was clearly greater.
Hearns has a chance but it's kind of small.

 

I am not sure.. I think the Hearns who fought Benitez and Duran if Robinson fought the 154 pound Hearns I think Hearns might surprise.. He was more calm than the 147 pound Hearns and more experienced and picked his shots using a jab. Not many guys were better.

 

But against a prime Robinson, EVEN IF he somehow manages to outbox Robinson for a stretch, sometime he's going to get hit hard and hurt.
At the very least, what Leonard did against Hearns at 147, Robinson should be able to do at 154 or 160 as well.

 

I would expect it to be a fun, competitive fight to watch. But I'd favor Robinson to stop Hearns late.

 

SRR was very lean. How well would he take Hearns punch. The fact is Robinson tried to move up to lightheavy later and do what Hearns accomplished two times and lost by TKO. well exhaustion. I am not sure how well Robinson takes a Hearns right hand being lean.. The guys who took it well were stocky guys who could absorb it.
