Henry Armstrong vs Floyd Mayweather, Jr. @ welter

Armstrong by stoppage, floyd was very very good but armstrong was better in addition to being a terrible stylistic matchup for mayweather

 

Armstrongs constant pressure would be too much. Imagine the trouble Maidana and Castillo caused Floyd in their 1st fights, and times that by 10.

 

Henry Armstrong by clear decision. I think Mayweather would have rope burns on his back after this one. Terrible style for a pure boxer even as great as Mayweather. Not to mention the pace that Hank would set would make a mere mortal wilt.

Remember Armstrong had a larger heart than the average man. His heart didn't need to beat as many times to do the same work. He could throw punches non stop without being winded or worn down. He was a freak of nature.

 

Armstrong by stoppage. But if they fought twice... Umm... Armstrong by stoppage. Oh wait.... Mayweather works you out sooo... Third fight... Armstrong by stoppage, bro.

 

I’m surprised Justin Juuko, Jesus Chavez, Angel Manfredy, Sharmba Mitchell, Corley, Bruseles, Gatti, lil’ JMM, Guerrero, Berto, and Baldomir couldn’t either.

Yeah, for sure. I think Floyd's inside savvy and toughness gets sold short. No stoppage in this fight.

Then again, Armstrong passes the eye test and had a style that could trouble any version of Floyd to no end.

I lean Armstrong at 130-135 lbs, but I kind of wonder if Floyd might be able to employ a similar gameplan to Zivic and spam the right from distance at the higher weight.

 

At 130 and 135 I like Armstrong by decision 9 - 6, with Armstrong's frenetic work rate canceling out Mayweather's adjustments. It would look a lot like Castillo vs Mayweather 1, where Castillo dominates the 2nd half of the fight, except picture Castillo having 3 more rounds to beat on Mayweather. At 140 it's closer, but Armstrong's activity in the late rounds is something behold, and 15 rounds is a long time . I like Armstrong 8 -7, but with the rounds more competitive. Ross, Arizmedi, and Ambers didn't use much head control or clinching to reset, and Mayweather would be using that spearing jab to the body. Still, I favor Armstrong unless its in Vegas.

At 147 I like Floyd by decision. Armstrong in his peak year of 1938 weighed only 138 against Ross. I have a hard time favoring anyone ceding 9 lbs against a near peak Floyd. I think Floyd can get enough bodywork in to trouble Armstrong, and while Floyd's power is middling at best, his strength is not. I think Floyd would be using it to good effect in wrestling with Armstrong inside, which is where Floyd would have to fight long stretches of the fight at when he wasn't moving. I would expect to see Floyd use the tactics from the Hatton fight and the 2nd Maidana fight I like Floyd 9 - 6 at 147.

 

Amstrong UD. Bad style matchup for Mayweather
