Frank Warren is an awful, behind the times promoter & Frampton/DeGale have committed career suicide

Some of the stuff in this thread is just nonsense. If Hearn is no1 he's no 1 No problem but that doesn't mean Warren is outdated and rubbish. Frank's BY shows have generally been great entertainment like the Leeds Bill the other week- far more interesting then the ppv circus we watched on Saturday. The Smith - Williams card looks very good and Dec 9 is shaping up nicely as well.

 

Warren's son (the one who looks a lot like him, Francis I think) is an awful talker. He's led a few press conferences and he is horrific in front of the cameras. Zero charisma.

 

Just watching the press conference for Degale/Selby... Frank was in full Brent Mode!

 

This whole matchroom vs Boxnation was all about being in the right place at the right time. It was SKY vs Warren.

1. Warren walks away from Sky as Sky were doing less boxing, stopped the pay-per-views, and cut the promoters pot from £25m a year to 1m.

2. Starts Box nation

3. Sky dumps the other promoters and gives the whole budget to Matchroom too sort out box nation.

4. BT Sports gets into boxing, Sky gets worried and threw a load of money at it.

You only got to look at Sky football vs BT Sports and the football to see how it could of gone.

You could say Matchroom got very lucky.

 

this. frank more or less carried uk boxing for a decade+. however I think the lack of competition at the time was causied him to take liberties with his fighters/cards etc during the latter part of his reign. it's a shame the broadcasting couldn't have been 50/50 between him and matchroom as it would have been better for the sport.

 

Boxnation was never a threat to Sky Sports.

 

Yeah obviously, sky previously funded warrens promotions.

They massively cut the budget so he said f you to sky and started box nation.

Sky then said f you to boxnation, cut lose all there boxng premotors and gave all the funding too matchroom.

It was BT sport that was the threat too sky and potential partnerships with boxnation, as they are now with the football... And potentially boxing.

And if you think BT isn't a threat to SKY you need a reality check. Sky is tiny in comparison. Something like 100k more employee and over 10 billion more in revenue.

There a behemoth in comparison hence sky's protectionist policies with boxing.

 

Point 4 is the most important and what i believe What Warren said was true.In 2012 when BT bought Football rights,Sky were scared that BT would come into boxing,so they decided to make Boxing Big again,with Carl Froch being the Flagship Fighter in the same way Joshua is now.That is how Matchroom got the Exclusive deal,then Froch v Kessler in 2013 started Sky Box Office again,they gave up after Haye-Klitschko.It is amazing that Sky pumping money back into British Boxing has made it big again,and Hearn Ironically has to thank BT's pressure for that but now BT/Boxnation are his biggest threats in the UK.

 

I don't see how they will be able to compete if BT want it and come to the conclusion it's profitable. They will outbid, offer more money to the boxers etc.

Either way healthy competition to make boxing get better in exactly the same way the premier league is dominating the world. They won't be able to compete.

Wouldn't be surprised if you start seeing UK premotors getting other nationalities boxers. Who wouldn't want the big pay days you get in our stadiums.

It's a war that's obviously coming in areas both companies have experience in.

This is also down too the national lottery funding they plough in. Won't be long before foreigners get over and get in to the infrastructure.

 

I don't like sticking the boot in too much, but Terry Flanagan seriously WTF.

How have they managed to make him so forgettable. It's incredible really, like some kind of Jedi mind trick. You can have a 1 hour chat about the lightweight division and somehow his name doesn't cross your mind.

Warren let his bitterness get the better of him to a point where i dont really listen to a word he says anymore. he does two things, makes snipes at Hearn/Sky/Matchroom or hes over-exaggerating to a standard Matchroom and hearn havent even managed yet.

 

Sky washed their hands of boxing because of the terrible job Warren did at promoting it, that is the reality.

 

Heard the same when ESPN launched in the UK. Who owns ESPN? Only Walt Disney.

 

I see what your trying to say. Big company with big funds who failed. They didn't realise the costs and were not willing to bid big.

But were talking about BT here. The people winning the battle vs SKY in football. They have equal share of the premier league but BT dominate with the profitable Champions league and Europa Cup where sky get the crap EPL.

Like I said before, if they want it and have a strategy in place they could easily take it as they are doing now.

The way things are going they would be stupid to not make a bigger attack.
