Danny "Little Red" Lopez vs Wilfredo Gomez at 126 lbs (1980):

Assume Gomez challenges Little Red in 1980 for the FWt WBC title, before
Sal Sanchez comes on the big time FWt scene.

Both Gomez and Little Red have been champions for a long period of time.

Little Red would have a 2 inch height advantage, plus a 5 inch reach advantage.

Plus Lopez hits as hard, if not harder than Sal Sanchez (who found Gomez' jaw early
and hurt Wilfredo bad in their real fight).

    Who wins?

Good analysis ^. Maybe the real reason why the fight was never made at that time.

Great statement ^. And I am not going to the refrigerator for a 'brewski" while the fight is on.

I like Gomez by KO. Danny was a great warrior but he was awfully easy to find in there. He didn't have the best defense. I think Gomez had more talent. I know that `22 was where Wilfredo made his great mark but I think he had enough beat Little Red. If it`s not a KO I think Gomez would win on points

Six pack eski beside the chair!!!

I think Gomez would outclass Danny. He had some serious skill in the early days.

Outside of 122 lbs, all bets are off.

To me I have not changed much over the last year in my thoughts....I would just change Lopez stopping him between 7-10 rather than 7 or sooner.

Gomez is one of the ATG Super Bantams, but I think that was his ceiling. He came up short against Sanchez and Nelson at FW and think Lopez while just a hair below those guys was still better than Gomez at FW and stylistically plays into Little Reds strengths.

    Lopez would stop him IMO

Also, Howard Cosell fills us in that Little Red needed plastic surgery after a particularly savage butt that earned his opponent a DQ. I never knew that.

Seems like a lot of guys back than had some degree of work done to their faces... Didn't Vito have the bone on his eyebrows worked on? I thought there was also an Alexis Arguello bout where he needed work done to his face afterwards and it ended up being done on a private plane or some such?

Gomez, as long as he trains. His legs are the key. He gives Lopez angles all night, and that's how you beat him.
