Carl Froch is the absolute worst thing about Sky Sports' boxing coverage. He constantly copies what his co-commentator says, then adds some pointless bit of bollocks. He feels the need to comment even when it is completely unnecessary, he chooses a fighter at the beginning of the fight and paints a one-sided picture even when the fight is close. He constantly contradicts himself. His tone is bland and boring, then he'll randomly start shouting about nothing punches when his "chosen fighter" gets any degree of success. Discuss
I think Carl is ok when he is working on the bigger fights when sky draft in a Malignaggi as he lifts his game up. When he’s commenting on missmatchroom shows with only Smith or one of the other sky boys like Bellew or the attrocious Barker then he slips into the cheerleading mode you mentioned. It could also be that it’s out of sheer boredom at the trash that he’s watching like the bum drafted in to fight Quigg why he sounds so disinterested.
There's no discussing it - He's the worst commentator they've ever had for Boxing. He has the enthusiasm of an AIDS patient, and to actually drop that 80k thing to Floyd was just pure ego. He knows nothing about the game. Macklin, Moore, Bellew & Nelson (when he is in the studio with his pen) are the best when they are on form.
Lets be honest the whole team is poor. Its incredible that they have gone for a 'jobs for the boys' approach, which means that rarely will you have a proper critique of any house fighter. Froch is the worst of the lot, for many reasons but the main one being that he has actually admitted he doesn't like boxing. I think he would really struggle to discuss any given weight class without notice. This is his job now! On a wider theme, all I ever hear is what a great state British boxing is right now. Sure there is a strong interest among the general population. However, its not interesting and the interesting domestic fights don't get made. Sky simply use boxing as a money making scheme to help pay for Premier League rights.
Good point. And I’ve noticed that as well. He’s definitely more insightful with Malignaggi. The commentary team is basically just a boys club otherwise.
It's More Sky losing Sports Content to BT and using Boxing as a way boost their Content on Weekends. They actually make a little from the PPV Revenue most of which gets split to the Fighters.
With all respect that is nonsense. They don't put adverts on all premium sports shows such as Super Sunday etc because they want to make Joshua richer! Not to mention the Joshua countdown clock every advert break. Come on, they make absolutely nothing off 'Fight Night' because the normal subscription stuff is already in the bag and viewership won't be great. That is why those shows are sh*t now. They give Eddie a budget for his shows and he tries to make a profit on that plus gate receipts etc. That again is why those shows are sh*t because Hearn wants to make as much money as possible. PPVs are a major money earner for Sky
His says the same thing in six different ways which I find pretty amusing. He talks without actually saying anything. Yeah they are all bad really, Froch isn't even the most irritating.
Froch isn't the most irritating. He's terrible, he has no knowledge of the game but he does have knowledge of the nuts and bolts, technical and physiological. He was a tremendous fighter, ok not quite as good as calzaghe , ward and Roy Jones, and he a bit of a knob but the way he used to come on strong in fights was fantastic. I try to focus on that than his sky work. Bellew, Nelson et al , are a disgrace and aren't fit to lace his boots as fighters. Johnnys as boring outside the ring as he was in, and that's saying something.
Good for Froch, freely admits he's not a boxing fan and is there to cater for the casuals, and gets paid for doing it. Or he's Frank Warrens inside man bringing down sky from the inside...
I’m going to score this one a 10-10 round, Jesus Carl do you not understand that even if it’s a close round you can give someone the round.
There was a thread about this last year, Sky absolutely love a 10-10 round! haha On official scorecards they're a bit of a rarity, yet Sky have minimum of one EVERY. SINGLE. FIGHT. If I was Eddie/Sky whenever Paulie isn't doing Showtime i'd break the bank to get him over, he is a brilliant analyst and isn't afraid to go against the home fighter.
At least Froch has the insight of a world champion fighter on the big stages, unlike Area Level-standard Moore/Macklin.
He could be good if he took the gig seriously and didn't just phone it in and pick up a cheque. He has insights to offer a telecast, but you can tell he isn't attentive enough during fights and doesn't do enough homework on the sport. It's basically a cushy number that he doesn't have to do any serious work for and which requires no real standards of performance from him. Let's face it, though, pretty much everyone on Sky is just as dreadful, with the exception of Malignaggi's occasional appearance.
