Jones had faster hands. Especially with one punch.

    Both had lights-out type power.
    Both could hurt the other.

Floyd is not bigger. Crazy talk.

I am thinking of LHW Roy who rehydrated to 185ish lbs to take on HW Patterson, who is similar weight, 185-190lbs.

Floyd did take punches for the duration from some quality heavies. Small heavies in general though, heavies I would pick Jones over most likely.

Definitely a good fight and not a sure KO victory for Floyd as the consensus goes...

I wouldn't be surprised by any outcome in this one really.

Floyd Patterson's chin is better than people make it out to be. It took top hw punchers in Liston and Ingo to stop him. And he got up in those fights. He got knocked down a lot but that is mostly due to his style/balance-issues and not due to his chin. It was not iron for sure but it wasn't glass either.

Physically, I think they are both quite similar. Same size, with 24h+ weigh-in Patterson might have started out at mw and spent most of his career at lhw as well. However, I think Patterson was stronger and hit harder. Jones was maybe a bit faster but if so not by enough to make a real difference.
I think Floyd had the better fundamentals too, was technically better than Jones. On the other hand Jones was more unconventional which worked well for him.
Patterson had far more experience around that weight as well and IMO over the course of his career fought better fighters while mostly being at a size disadvantage, eg. to me he is the more proven fighter.

Floyd should be the solid favourite here. Jones would be on his bike, trying to avoid Floyd's punches and to counter him with some occasional success, maybe even a flash knockdown early on when Patterson lunges in, but ultimately he cannot avoid Floyd for 15 rounds and he'd get knocked out. Patterson KO9 Jones Jr.

Disclaimer: I'm biased. Patterson is one of my favourites and I'm immensely disappointed how Jones career turned out.

It does not matter if this is 12 or15 rounds as it will never get there.

    Floyd stops RJJ in 8

Thing to remember: Roy was phenomenally fast FOR A MIDDLEWEIGHT.

Don't tell me Floyd was faster.

For me, it's less about Patterson being faster, and more about Floyd being fast enough. Speed-based heavyweights are a tougher nut to crack for Roy than immobile ones. The wider the speed gap, the better Roy looks because he can fight the way he likes and dictate tempo & range.

Against other fast heavyweights, that comparative advantage isn't there to that extent, and that makes a huge difference IMO.

The rest of the package becomes more important at that point. Floyd's combination punching, handspeed, and power is a rough matchup for Roy unless Roy gets to him first. That's a possibility, but it's not the one I'd bet on.

My bet is Floyd either gets him within the distance or by points.

Outside of Ingo & Sonny who ever really hurt Floyd (perhaps Quarry's 2nd KD in the first fight; but he rose and proceeded to kick Jerry's arse) but even against those two he was rising. Roy's power wasn't in Ingo/Sonny's league! Passive, humble Floyd? A UD. Aggressive, attacking Floyd? Good night Roy!

Yes, when he was a middleweight. Is that all there is to this particular point or am I missing something really, really obvious?

I think it comes down more to a style match up (which doesn't necessarily contradict your point). If either is faster than the other or hits harder at cruiserweight, it certainly isn't obvious, at least not to me.

Patterson after a gruelling contest by the narrowest split decision.

Jones was a great LHW, but hes going the way of Bob foster against a decent HW.

No 185 crusier is going to KO Floyd (repeat: Sonny said he's never hit anyone harder and Floyd was rising. Ingo clocked him with a down the pipe shot that would have iced many great HW's and...he rose an fought back.) Outside of that no one really hurt him. Sonny's left hook and right? Ingo flush right hand right on the money? Does Roy have anything near that power? NOT....hey RJJ may have scored a flash KD; who cares? How did Pattaerson do after his several flash KD's? Rose and kicked arse!! Roy, if you attempted to engage Patterson in a slugfest, you're tasting heavy leather. And if that left hook landed CLEAN? Roy is helped up and led to his corner a q u e e r street defeated warrior. My $0.02

Some might say he retained his speed quite well.
