Have you ever seen Jay Leno's schtick were he'd go out and ask Americans very simple questions?
He once asked this woman if she was religious, and she said absolutely! Went to church every Sunday. He asked her how many apostles Jesus had and she said "40".

The real answer, for you heathens, is 12.

There was a video 1-2 years ago when Wilder who was already a HW champ walked around at Times Square and not a soul recognized him either.

It’s not just that. The heavyweight boxing scene in the US is NOT what it once was. No one really cares about heavyweight boxing in America. It hasn’t been a Premier division since the early to mid 90s and even then it was losing ground to guys like Tito, DLH and Juilo Cesar Chavez. There’s no superstars that stand out in America that are heavyweights. Without Manny and Floyd, Boxing in America is lacking notoriety. Even Alvarez who is the most popular boxer in the world isn’t a household name here in the states, but more people know the name

I love Hearn, but he's not going to crack America.
The difference from the UK to the US viewer is that we sports fan usually follow more sports.
Like 90% + of the male population follows a football/soccer team.
To watch football on TV you need to get Sky, which promotes AJ heavily. So all those male fans, know who Joshua is. We tell our GF's about football, boxing, than they tell their friends. Parents find out, they know who he is. Like most of the people who go to AJ fights ain't hardcore boxing fans, they're just casual sports fans.

I know for a lot of boxers in the USA it's very hard to become a household name.
But I do think that wilders promoter have done a terrible job. That isn't at all against wilder just his team, I think they could have done a lot better

If Wilder was promoted on social media better he'd be more well known. Just checked his Twitter page and its 218k followers.
    Fury 747k
    AJ 1.63m
Hearn 560k a promoter of boxers is more well known than the WHC
    Price 184k
    Bellew 434k
