John David Jackson: Daniel Jacobs not as good as you think he is

Calling the cowardly Lion of Belfast a good boxer is a stretch. He'd get whooped by Rigondeaux, and Russell Jr. He almost got whooped by that scrub in his PBC debut. Both Garcia and Linares would fight Lomachenko, and Rigondeaux is about to fight him.

 

I'm surprised Jacobs can still make MW. He was massive in the GGG fight.

I can't see Jacobs ever becoming a box office attraction if he hasn't already.

 

Well he never got any real media push.
The two biggest fights he had were the GGG PPV and then Sergio Mora on ESPN(a million tuned in to see that).
Inactivity, weak opposition, network jumping. A lot of factors.
But time will tell how far he can go in terms of popularity.
Definitely an overpaid athlete if there ever was one.

 

Lomachenko hasn't had that problem at 130. He's fought Walters, and Sosa, two of the better 130 pounders since he moved to 130. Now guys like Russel Jr, and Rigondeaux, they are avoided, by cowards like Frampton, Selby, and Santa Cruz

 

I have a feeling that Jacobs is in for a harder fight than people expect on Saturday. He's probably going to get the win but I suspect it won't be impressive and there'll be lots of Jacobs bashing afterwards.

 

so what's the book on Arias? how good is he? what kind of fighter is he? what's strengths & weaknesses?

Arias is pretty good.

He's solid and has good fundamentals and good power. There's nothing truly exceptional but he does everything well, good jab, nice left hook. If Jacobs is at his best and fully focussed he'll probably outbox Arias, but it's far from a given.
