Will Floyd Mayweather become more well appreciated as time goes on?

Greb's greatness is not being disputed nor is anyone putting Mayweather ahead of him.

But Greb is not a fighter who went 49-0 so bringing him up is a tangent. (He lost some of his first fights for those of you who are confused.)

 

OK. I thought you were claiming Floyd to be the best ever.

I do think time will be kind to him but he makes the Top 15-20 by most rational eyes.

 

His talent will be more appreciated, his resume will be less appreciated

 

Honestly never really thought that highly of Floyd. Still don't. Probably never will

 

I'd say he'll be less appreciated, as perspective sets in and diminishes the grossly inflated perception of him among a section of his fans who seem to think the idea of defence in boxing was his personal innovation.

He was a more than decent boxer, but tarnished his own career by ducking serious tests. His one-punch-then-grab octopus style should really have been clamped down on more by referees, and his lack of combination punching were serious weaknesses for a boxer with such an inflated sense of his own importance.

TBE? No. By no means. Not even the best of his era, but probably one of the better fighters in a weak era.

 

The folks who either don’t understand or don’t follow boxing well enough to appreciate his extraordinary talents probably won’t be changing their minds any time soon (or ever).

Canelo had to weigh 151 and STAY at 151. He was drained. He's a huge LMW, so why shrink him down a further albs?

Golovkin won like 9-3, and GGG is on a very visible decline now.

Cotto, at that stage, wasn't at his best. Manny's win over him was much better.

The Pacquiao fight should have happened about 6-7 years before it did. Mayweather simply stalled and made excuses until Pacquiao's skills were very much eroded.

Yes, yes, I know - Mayweather was older, too. Didn't really affect his hit-and-hold style, though. When they were both old, Mayweather came out on top. At their best, Pacquiao would beat him handily. Mayweather knew that.

 

I think he has a fantastic record. Top 20, have to give more thought.

Definitely underrated, generally.

Julio Cesar Chavez v Mayweather. Hmmm....would be an interesting one - and certainly the end of Mayweather as an undefeated fighter.

 

Then if you believe that, the Floyd Connor fight must be the first boxing match you have ever seen in your life ... That's a General Forum statement ... which this thread pretty much belongs in anyway ......
