charles too skilled but hes not a real MW, 3G would have to move up. Ezzard by clear decision in a tuogh brusing encounter. 19 is stupid to picka matchup, its prime or nothing.
I'll take Charles by UD. His first knockout loss was against Marshall, pretty much a middleweight, but Charles had injured his hip previously. After that he wasn't knocked out again until the 3rd Walcott fight at Heavyweight. Charles was incredibly skilled and beat Charley Burley after only 2 years as a pro.
If you're pitching 19 year old Charles against a prime GGG, then Golovkin mauls him. I don't see a green fighter taking out GGG, I don't care how great he went on to be later.
I give it to Golovkin by decision, Charles is a greater P4P fighter, but he hadn't completely matured yet.
No I was mentioning that he turned pro at age 19 as a middle weight. It's supposed to be the best middle weight Charles vs GGG
He also lost to Kid Tunero and had a draw and a loss to Ken Overlin, neither of which are in the same tier as Golovkin. Billy Bengal also says that "If I could knock Ezzard down, Golovkin can hurt him too."* I'm guessing that Burely was either 'off' then or that Charles was a particularly bad match stylistically for him. *This quote being pulled out of my ass but reflecting the fact that a guy who was 39-16-6 made Charles touch canvas.
Overlin was coming off a world title fight when he beat Charles and, with names on his record like Soose, Yarosz and Apostoli, he fought much better competition than Golovkin.
I'd favor the fully mature seasoned middleweight in this one. Charles was a bit fragile at this stage of his career and was not the fighting machine we come to know later.
Didn't say that. But he is at least as good as anybody Golovkin has fought so losing to him in your 18th fight is nothing to be ashamed of. Also, while fighting at 165, Charles beat Bivins and Maxim, while giving up considerable weight. He fought much better competition in his first 35 fights than has GGG, so he would not be "green" by any stretch.
Burley was a Welter, having to frequently fight bigger opponents. Charles had 9 pounds on him in the rematch.
