A top 3 atg fighter at 160 and as one of the best fighters of his era. Probably top 35 or top 40 atg.
Spoken like a true racist. White boys calling a Black man racist because he calls a white man "white boy." That's not an uncommon term for a white man in the U.S., and it's not deemed racist. It's usually racist white men who complain about it. He does talk a lot. He likes to hear himself speak. Do you expect a boxer from 38- 51 years old to be a face first brawler? Saying his style left a lot to be desired, suggests that you didn't see him fight when he was younger. Anybody calling a younger Hopkins boring is just a hater.
Singular not plural. The Calzaghe decision was a robbery. Joe Smith Jr, knocked his arse out of the ring and into retirement though.
Getting hit less than 50 actual times in 12 rounds is an odd definition of a whoopin. Hopkins damn near doubled Calzaghe's connect rate in that fight, in video analysis.
Calzaghe id not land ,ore than 25 LEGAL SCORING PUNCHESin all 12 rounds how the hell could he have won
sounds like how Duran is viewed. He wins against Barkley. wow he is great. He loses to Hearns by knockout 5 years before at a lower weight he had an off night.
I've met Hopkins by chance encounter (outside Cafe Roma on the third floor of Caesar's AC after Matthysse-Peterson, he and his party ended up dining a table over from ours) and never got the slightest hint of this. Honestly one of the most gracious and modest men of public note I've ever been in the immediate vicinity of. The guy practically blushed when I approached him, offered my handshake (which he accepted without hesitation) and told him I was a big fan of his career and that it was a pleasure to meet him. His reaction was nothing short of bashful and he was exceedingly courteous. I realise the "never let a whiteboy beat me" business left him with something of a reputation, but I do dismiss the comment as hype for the fight with Joe. Hopkins is not a man known for post-defeat concession, but he was full of praise and respect for Sergey Kovalev (himself an alleged racist) after they met in the ring and the two men seemed to be on very amicable terms - I don't know that he would've been so forthcoming with praise, or that an irascible character like Sergey would've been able to reconcile with him after a fight, if Hopkins harbored any genuine hostility toward white folks. In most instances, I'd rather observe fighters' interactions with other fans than approach them myself, but every significant Hopkins memory -- from the beatdown of Jouvin Mercado on enemy turf (The Terror) to his comprehensive throwback schooling of an undergraduate Glen Johnson (The Executioner) to the 'still got it' taming of a titlist 17 years his junior in Tavoris Cloud (The Alien) and every idiosyncratic highlight in between -- came rushing into mind in one big wave when I set eyes on him a few feet away, so I figured an introduction was due. One of my very favorite fighters from my own lifetime.
Exactly. Once a person gets to a certain age and is fighting above their best weight, it gets to a point were you can't hold losses against them any more.
