The fight was stopped even though George Foreman was up at the count of 8 and it didn't appear that the ref checked to see if he was ok. Now one may say that had the fight continued, Ali wins anyway, but we don't know that. Improbable things have happened before in boxing. Foreman could've landed the perfect, one in a million uppercut that landed flush on Ali's chin and put him down for a 10 count in a come from behind win. Improbable I know, but it may have happened.

Also, I've heard rumors that the fight was fixed and that the ropes were loosened to suit Ali. Don't know if it's true or not, but I have heard and read it. And Foreman being up at 8 and then the fight being immediately stopped just adds to the questions.

The ropes were actually tightened by Angelo Dundee several hours before the fight. He was concerned about Ali falling out of the ring. I think you can hear the count going to 9

Foreman was actually down for 11 seconds - the commentator just lost track of the count.

I wish people would just watch the fight rather than reading mythology regarding it.

Ali UTTERLY outclassed Foreman. He coasted when he wanted, and every single time he opened up he was landing and stunning George. He barely got hit during the fight, slipping and countering and winning the in fights.

Amazing performance. You'd think the heat didn't affect a 32 year old man at least as much as a 24 year old man.

So much nonsense surrounding the fight. For **** sake you can literally hear Angelo Dundee screaming "CAREFUL ALI" repeatedly when he was on the ropes. Aside from that he complained about them during a break between rounds.

I know he's credited with saying that loose ropes were a "strategy", but that is clearly just a guy adding to the romance and legend of the night, as all audible evidence is of him being worried about the situation at the time.

ATG performance by a past prime legend.

    I ****ing love it.

I always thought the count was kind of iffy, but Ali was totally out-classing George by then and pretty much toying with him so I don't think it would have made any difference. :lupie:

George was done by the time he got stopped. Physically exhausted and mentally ready to capitulate. He didnt even complain about the stoppage. Just kind of walked off.
    Ali beat him comprehensively

IDK what the count was, but if Foreman was up before 10 he should have been given the chance to continue. You could say he was tired, and that Ali was owning him, or you don't think it would have made a difference, that's all besides the point. He didn't look that hurt to me. Another gift for Ali!

A gift. My God some people are just irrational with Ali. I wonder why.

Not to take away from Ali's performance, but you are right. Foreman should've been allowed to continue if he beat the count and if he wasn't so clearly hurt or taking so many unanswered punches that the referee felt he had no choice but to stop it in the interest of safety.

Angelo Dundee was seen paying the referee Zack Clayton money before the fight.

When it was brought up, Dundee said he was just giving money to Clayton to stop it in case Ali was taking a serious beating. (As we saw in subsequent fights, however, Dundee didn't care one way or another if Ali was taking a serious beating. He didn't even stop the Holmes fight until Ali's manager gave him the signal to do so.)

Today, if any fighter's trainer was seen paying a referee, and then the referee gave the opponent a quick count while he was down, can you imagine the firestorm?

Considering Foreman had never been down before, and he got up before the count of 10, and he was the champ, and Ali's trainer paid off the ref before the fight (and was spotted), yeah, Foreman got cheated.

It may not have made a difference is my thought, too. But you never know what might have happened. Very improbable things happen all the time in boxing. Lucky punches, etc. I know Ali had a better chin than Walcott, but the shot Marciano landed was picture perfect. Who's to say that Foreman wouldn't have landed a similar, picture perfect shot on Ali? I'd agree that it would've been very unlikely and Foreman would have just been in for more punishment is the more likely scenario.
