For what it's worth I don't think Rocky was small for his time. A lot was made of him being small years later sometimes because it made a more romantic story. Looking at the films he was clearly in the same height range as Walcott and Charles who were both listed at 6 feet. Looked taller than 5'11 listed cockell same height as Mathues and Latarza. He give away a few pounds to the above but not enough for anyone to consider him small at the time if you read contemporary articles.Louis, Baker and Valdes were considered huge in the 50s almost outsized heavyweights but Rocky and co were,it seems, accepted as normal size heavys.

He deserves to be ranked in the top 10, but he's in the lower half of my list at no. 8 after Ali, Louis, Johnson, Holmes, Dempsey, Foreman and Frazier.

I don't think Patterson was really any bigger. Tunney, Dempsey, Ellis.. there is a whole swathe of them. The one guy some want to rule out as a real heavyweight is Rocky.

If Rocky gets ruled out on size you have to rule out half the best heavyweights

Oh Wow, so you are going to be foolish now. Not typed myself, copied and pasted. It's from boxrec and Wikipedia, who both sourced it from RING magazine.

http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Archie_Moore

Yes, Census is public record. You can find plenty of "Archie" listed there if you are really that interested. Here is the Census that guesses his DOB at 1917 actually. So Moore's Dec 1916 sounds good enough but in truth he might have actually been even 37 when he faced Maricano. Not surprised.

View Record Archie L Wright city, St Louis (Independent City), Missouri abt 1917 Mississippi.

This frankly kills any notion of Moore being 42 years old or older when he faced Maricano. He was likely 38 or even 37.

That always seemed a bit bonkers to me. No poor male from this time is going to lie to make themselves seem younger, they will likely go with the oldest estimate so they can get work or serve in the military as soon as possible.

Moore joined the Civllian corps when he was listed at 17 and old enough to serve. Do you really think a poor kid, desperate for work would wait till their 20 to serve?

Use your head, do your research. Don't just jump on one myth because it suits your agenda.

"Moore claimed he was born December 13, 1916, but his mother said he was born December 13, 1913. Moore joked, "I have given this a lot of thought and have decided that I must have been three when I was born." The U.S. Census record from 1920 seems to put an end to the mystery. "Archie L. Wright" is listed as a nephew in the household of Cleveland Moore and was three years and two months old on the date of the census — January 2, 1920."
Why would his mother lie? As far as I'm concerned the jury is still out.

Of course the jury is out for people like Mcvey who are more interested in agenda than truth.

The US Census is as definitive as it gets, they estimate 1917, which leans towards the late 1916 claim. Common sense fills in the rest. Moore joined the Civilian Corps when old enough to serve and took up boxing as soon as he could. He was sentenced to 3 yearsReform school because he was a young teen, not an adult.

Moore's mother was an older woman when interviewed and was possibly just simply mistaken or misquoted.

How old do you say Moore's mother was?

Definitive nothing!
Sonny Liston's census record is still argued over today!

Agenda? What possible reason could I have for trying to make Moore older than he was?

Why are you dismissing Moore's mother's claim he was older? THAT is agenda!
Here is the IBHOF's take on Moore's age.

Born: Dec.13, 1913
Died: Dec. 9, 1998

This is the NY Times.

Mystery always surrounded him. He claimed to have been born on Dec. 13, 1916, in Collinsville, Ill., but his mother, and at least one boxing record book, fixed his birthdate as Dec. 13, 1913, in Benoit, Miss., a date his family confirms.

Here is the introduction to his biography "The Ageless Warrior"

Starting his career in the middleweight division, Moore moved up in weight class in 1945. Ultimately he dominated the light-heavyweight division, winning his first world title in 1952 (at age 39) and successfully defending that title for nearly a decade. The versatile Moore often fought at heavyweight in the 1950s, twice challenging for the heavyweight crown, including an epic battle with Marciano in 1955.

Can you count!

Mcvey, you brought up your family in a heated argument as you always do. I said "I dont give a **** about your family, **** em. This is a boxing forum, nobody cares" You bring your alleged personal life into arguments on purpose all the time

In an unrelated conversation, i discussed training with my grandfather as a child with another member. You injected some very graphic and disturbing comments suggesting I was forced to performed oral sex on my grandfather while a child. So yes, you are a sick man with pedo leanings. That is left field nasty stuff that goes beyond typical trash talk, and whatever mod at the time covered for you.

You also called Rez gay just recently because he posted about Marciano.

And you should be banned. You get away with far too much, and clearly mentally unbalanced. This is the third time at least you dug up the past and made a pedo accusation at me, a pretty huge distortion of the truth.

Archie Moore was really called Archibald Wright. He was found under a gooseberry bush on 29th of Feb 1917, a leap year. That's why his birth has always been disputed. His biological Father was said to have been a professor of Egyptian/ Chinese decent and his mother a robust black woman of immense physical prowess. Mrs Moore took him in. She knew of the parents but raised baby Archibald as her own.
