What do you mean?

 

I mean that the way he counter punched he achieved more reach than Louis would using his hooks. Granted Louis' jab was excellent but he's not KOing Wlad with that; in fact I think Wlad outjabs him.

 

Lets not get carried away, this is Sanders that you are talking about.

He is simply not somebody who a great fighter should be losing to period.

 

Sanders is a lot better than his record would indicate.

Great fighters have lost to far worse competition than Sanders

 

I agree that he seems to be a lot better than his record indicates, but you have to be careful about rationalizing this sort of loss after the fact.

 

I'm a Sanders nuthugger and I wasn't surprised that he managed to knock Wlad out. Having followed his career I knew what Corrie could do when he was in the mood, and this was his last chance. If wishes were fishes, I'd get to see an alternate reality where Sanders was a gym rat and he had a better promoter. I believe that he could have been great.

 

So you were actually following him before he fought Wlad.

Well I'm a South African so he was big news locally. He'd mauled all the local stars - Du Plooy professionally and Botha 4 times in the amateurs - and he'd performed well against guys that had good outings against the stars, like Billups (Lewis), Cooper (Holyfield) and Card (Holmes). Big things were expected.

The Wlad version of Sanders was just about done for. He's had a long career with lots of "I want to fight Tyson, Holyfield, Lennox" type statements, all of which never came to fruition, and mentally, I think he'd checked out of boxing for a while. The Wlad fight reignited the spark - briefly.

 

Louis by KO inside 8 rounds. Vlad got more careful after the KO losses but he was still vulnerable - he just didn't have anyone who could expose him until Joshua. Louis would have been quicker than him, would have punched harder than him and was a better all-round boxer than him as well.
