I feel McClellan was exposed by Benn because he had so much trouble catching him clean and was really unsettled with a fighter coming forward and fighting back. Gerald was a one trick pony, if he couldn`t KO you then he had no other answers seemly, he couldn`t fight on the backfoot and had no defensive skills, he did fight better offensively under Manny Steward`s guide though and may have done better vs Benn had Manny been in his corner, why do Americans still rate him so high? Is it because of his lethal punch and that`s all they think it takes in boxing, Benn seemed to out savvy him, what does anyone think?
I believe he was already suffering before he got in the ring with Benn, its also been documented over the years too. I think a healthy McClellan would've got Benn out of there midway point after giving him a bad beating. He was a ticking time bomb with that injury and if he had a decent caring team around him he probably wouldn't have even entered that fight or fights previous.
Not overrated at all. Benn was punching him in the back of the head all night, and G man already had brain trauma from some of the bombs he took from julian jackson. Nobody, including RJJ wanted anything to do with that man.
McClellan was legit. The fact that he went toe to toe with Jackson and took him out was amazing. I don't see how you can question whether he was overrated. How the hell can he be overrated when beating Jackson in that manner. The fact that he moved up and fought Benn and lost does not discredit McClellan's earlier achievements.
As a puncher he wasn't over rated his power was legit scary, nobody ever went through Benn like he did in that first round, it was usually Benn who would **** you up early with his power. But he wasn't anywhere as complete as a fighter as he should of been. Leaving Steward was a mistake he never realised his full potential. Steward said he was the most talented fighter he had ever trained. Huge power, iron jaw, apparently he walked through Hearns best right hand. But Steward also said he fell in love with his power, he didn't have the patience in the ring to set things up, he always tried too hard to force openings and because of these things he became a one trick pony. His boxing skills were neglected. He had a good jab, but his defence was poor, he relied on having an iron chin too much which likely resulted in him getting hit far too much. I think someone would of out boxed him eventually even if he beat Benn.
Exposed? He beat Benn from pillar to post in that first round and should have got the stoppage. Like many have said before: Julian Jackson started his physical decline. Crazy to think of that.
Agreed. Thing with Gerald, though, was that he was a legit LHW. No way was he a MW or SMW. He had to be the biggest cutter of the time. His left to the body is amongst the best ever thrown, and his combo of that punch paired with the right up top prior to the left being thrown was amazing. He was the man to beat RJJ, IMHO.
Had so much trouble catching him clean??? Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. He almost stopped Benn in the first and twice in the fight. They were both winning rounds. Brutal fight. Both were connecting, only Benn after landing a big shot was rabbit punching and the ref let it go. Overrated? No. He ko'd Jackson who was tearing everyone up, but nobody overrated him. They wanted to see him in with Johnson, Jones Jr, Hop, Parker, or McClellan in the future. I'm not going to speak on the man because of his condition. He was the victim of a rabbit punching and is suffering from it today. Benn didn't expose anyone.
Mike McCallum was more impressive against Jackson and got him out in two plus McCallum would have beat Mugabi at light middle and Benn at middle.
