The first image that came to me was Sugar Ray Robinson dropping the overhand right on Randy Turpin when he needed that punch. Watching some of the film' of Sugar Ray in the Golden Gloves way back in 39 show the overhand right being devastating. He just had so many other punches in his arsenal he didn't depend on any just one that much. In more modern boxing Tim Witherspoon had a really great overhand. Ask Frank Bruno. He pounded Frank into the canvas line a nail. That was a punch Tim used quote often. I guess Max Baer deserved a mention. That was his bread and butter as well. I don' know of anyone who had a better overhand than Rocky Graziano.
Good mentions so far. Lewis Graziano SRR great picks. I would also definitely add Marciano Louis Tyson Freddie Steele Sam Langford For the very best, I would say it's between Louis or Rocky.
Not mentioned is Michael Spinks who at 175 had an overhand right to die for. It almost decapitated guys at times. For pure power Shavers was frightening and when Julian Jackson turned one over look out. Hopkins was extremely accurate with his.
Speaking of Rocky, I just watched a video on him that Serge linked to. The author was "reznick". I'm guessing that it was you? Just wanted to say it was a great, great piece of editing. Better than 99% of the youtube crapola out there.
I was never the biggest fan of Ken Norton, but I have to say about his overhand right that it was one of the most ripping, fastest shots I ever saw. He employed it when he had an opponent on the ropes. Nailed Ali with it several times during their 3rd fight and took the senses from Bobick with it. Did not employ it with the same regularity against Holmes and Young - he did nail them with it - but I put this down to him getting older and the difficulty in delivering it, because the effort in the manner he delivered it had to take a lot out of him energy-wise. Still, a thing of beauty and one of those shots that make you go, "Ohhhhh!"
The Most dramatic over hand right has to be Oleg Maskiev up ending Hasim Rahman. Poor Rahman went through the ropes, broke a table with his head before breaking his fall, head first on bare concrete under the table. Then, before anybody could stop it, a big metal technical contraption slid from the busted part of the table onto hasim as he lay there. And even better, the slow motion replay captures the moment a metal folding chair was thrown down from the top of the arena and hit Steve Smoger squarely on the dyed strands of hair covering his bald head.
