    OMG. I'm writing a book tracing the heavyweight lineage as far back as I possibly can and you just saved me a ton of research. THANKS RUMMY.

    A superb video, and brilliant explanation of the politics of the lineage.

    My only criticism would be that the lineage started in my opinion, when Jem Mace defeated Tom Allen, to unify the British and American heavyweight titles. Mace retired with the title, so that Sullivan had to start from scratch.

    You could take it back even further, if you included failed attempts to establish lineage.

    Thanks. You know, I was actually reading about Mace when I was researching this, and I was considering including that in the video, but ultimately decided on just starting "in the 1880s" and going with Sullivan as the starting point. Because even then, the start of his lineage itself is a matter of debate as I understand it.

    I may at some point do a more detailed video, or one with a narrower scope, at some point. And if I do, I will definitely try and incorporate more of these elements. I wish I had HD footage of all these fights, and I wish more photos/videos existed from the pre-1900 era.

    Jem Mace was the first fighter to be called "the world heavyweight champion", with the justification being that he unified the British and American titles in 1870. After Mace retired Tom Allen claimed the American title, and Joe Goss claimed the British title. They then faced off, with Joe Goss claiming the world title based on his win. Goss went on to lose to Pady Ryan, who in turn lost to Sullivan, from where you expertly took up the narative.

    There are also some fascinating "what ifs".

    In 1845 the British Champion Ben Caunt, traveled to America, to challenge the American Champion Tom Hyer. Hyer did not respond to his challenge. In 1850 Tom Hyer issued a challenge to the then British Champion William Perry. Again the challenge was declined. Either one of these fights could have created a lineage much earlier.

    In 1860, British Cahmpion Tom Sayers, took on the American Champion John C Heenan. The fight ended in a draw, so both men retained their titles.

    Great stuff, janitor! The idea of championship boxing existing before the American Civil War took place just boggles the mind. I was dimly familiar with Mace having a claim to being the first, but all that pre-1880 stuff is uncharted territory for me. Fascinating!
