Kovalev did not lose to SOB! Kovalev was set up to lose by the judges, boxing commission, referee, etc., he did not lose to SOB at all! SOB did not throw body punches, he threw testicle punches! This content is protected
beter is devastating in the inside kovy cant fight in the inside kovy couldnt fight in the inside with a feather fisted andre ward beter has too much power for kova would knock him out
The other fella had a good jab and was coming forward in the first round though. He had the fight punched out of him quite quickly as Kov was sitting down on his punches and looking to hurt him early, but his jab was good imo
The fight was out of Kov's control because Ward Was tattoing his family jewels & ref Weekes was letting him Watch the fight again look closely at where Weekes marks the foul line. You'll see .plain as day, at least TEN punches from Ward land WAYYY BELOW. Then came the coup de gras The blatant assault on Kovalevs testicles which warranted am immediate DQ Note Kovs head was unprotected bit Ward fired two more to the testicles Was the ref Tony Weekes Bought off or was he incompetent?? Either way Kovalev was robbed
At some point Kov should have taken things into his own hands. Instead he shut down....possibly felt as though the world was against him and there was nothing he could do? Who knows? But if he was getting hit with low blows and the ref was letting it go...Kov should have given Ward a taste of his own medicine. Instead, he relied on his pleading to sink in and the ref to come to his aide. At some point he knew the ref wasn’t going to help him out and accepted his defeat.
I'm not interested in discussing the legality of Ward's shots downstairs, because it's a circular argument. Some were borderline, some may have been low, many were legal. It's the fight game. You're a Hopkins fan. You (should) know the score. I don't necessarily blame Kovalev for not going tit for tat and hitting Ward low if he felt like he was being hit low, but that is one way of dealing with it. That aside, I've already said that I don't agree with our fellow poster re. his assertion that Kovalev had mentally checked out and accepted defeat. Sergey tried to hang in there and fight his way out clean, but Ward had maneuvered him into a very tight spot.
There is no more need to discuss Ward's punches, just watch the video. Tony Weekes borderline must have been 7 to 8 inches wide.
Sergey played by the rules a biased ref & a dirty opponent robbed him Had Sergey fired one back in retaliation, Ward would have done what Ruiz did against Kirk Johnson & collapse inan Oscar winning display of agony & Weekes would have DQ'd Kov just like Joe Cortez did Kirk
Ok, I'll play. First and last post on the matter. The shots that are touted as the fatal punches were on the white beltline of Kovalev, at least in the case of the ones whose points of connection were visible to the cameras. Even the final shot, which looks low in certain frames due to Sergey's posture and Ward's glove brushing some of the hanging fabric of his trunks during its trajectory, hit the white beltline. That was where Ward was aiming his shots. I'm not going to say that Ward never strayed clearly low at any point in the fight, because that would first require me to refer to the video and review every last body punch from rounds 1-8 to check the statement for veracity. One might argue the borderline shots and the shots that were unclear, but there were plenty of shots to the body landed by Ward that were legal, such as the hurtful pair of left hooks I mentioned earlier in the thread which elicited visible pain and discomfort from Kovalev. This was not a Mares-Agbeko situation, nor even close to it. Ward won, and deserves credit. Both men deserve credit for an hour of competitive, high-level boxing that elevated both mens' historical status. Gatti spent 6 rounds banging Wilson Rodriguez on the hips, and the boxing fraternity celebrates him 21 years later. So let's not be bitter and churlish, regardless of where our subjective loyalties lie.
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on the matter OK ? As for loyalties ? I have no loyalty to Sergey Kovalev as such other than to see him get a fair crack of the whip in a fight, which he did not get in this one. I wish the same thing for all fighters entering the ring, Sadly today $$$ & corruption prevent that happening today
