On the Billy Joe Saunders vs. David Lemieux card December 16th on HBO, in the co-featured slot. The spoils of this one could well be next crack at whoever emerges champ from the main event...particularly if they steal the show. TV ratings sometimes matter a bit more than sanctioning body rankings. Each has on their resume a pair of eminently forgivable blemishes, respectively. For the Virginian: a TKO10 loss to modern day Harry Greb facsimile Avtandil Khurtsidze and ten-round majority draw with the slick Michel Soro. Both are world class and he didn't embarrass himself on either occasion. As for the Cork man: he was virtually shut out by rising star BJS in a battle of unbeaten prospects in 2013, and walked through an inordinate amount of punishment before submitting inside schedule to Saunders' rival and second-generation athletic phenom Chris Eubank Jr. in 2015. As for the W column, neither has any single achievement that is all that glittering. Both have gained their reputations by just looked consistently "pretty good" (within their given styles) versus low-level competition, while acquitting themselves admirably despite coming up short in their steps up. Each has a couple of B-ish victories, one C+, and then dumpsters full of tomato cans. Douglas boasts as his career twin peaks back-to-back knockouts over Swiss-Hungarian basic Euro grinder István Szili and lanky New Jersey regional draw Cornflake Lamanna in 2015. Spike has as his primary trophies a pair of Brits - outpointing former Commonwealth 154lb champ Matthew Hall in 2012 and smashing a game but physically outmatched Nick Quigley to a pulp two months ago. Scraping the barrel to find a third decent scalp yields for O'Sullivan his KO1 blitz of countryman Anthony Fitzgerald (known for giving an undertrained Andy Lee a difficult night) with a record now standing at 18-8; and for Douglas probably the Mexican trial horse Pablo "Gravedigger" Munguia...who enjoyed a nice run of upsets in 2012-2014, but down at welterweight (and he's now 38yo, sitting at 21-12, and Douglas was the seventh person to stop him). Up for grabs in this is the more tangible reward of the WBO Intercontinental middleweight title, and the peace of mind of dodging a setback on the march to relevance (and fatter paychecks).
Good info here. It's a fight that makes sense really, I suppose. O'Sullivan has a rep as a huge hitter but I've never really been sold on that. I think Douglas probably takes this but I'm not saying that with too much conviction
Douglas couldn't deal with AK at all ......so the blueprint is there...swarming him is the way to go....and spike naturally fights that way anyhow. As against that, Spike has never beaten anyone of note. Not even once. Losing each time he stepped up...although admittedly the "step ups" were FAR too big a step up ...from plodders to world class in each case. Also Spike is a bit small for middleweight. Last chance saloon for spike at approx 33. He might just have a bit too much power for Douglas.
I think the level that Douglas has actually beaten, slightly trumps that of Spike, and although I had him losing the Soro fight (backyard draw), he showed to be more competitive at the higher level as O'Sullivan. And... home (promoter) advantage again. Douglas UD
Spike will clean Antoine's clock and brutally TKO him in 5. I think the moment he gets tagged by Gary, he'll have a Nam like flashback to Khurtsidze and freeze up and go into survival mode and get worked over.
That's also possible of course. But Khurt >>>>> O'Sully in my opinion. There's no "Mike Tyson, baby!" in Spike if you ask me.
Eh, what's Khurtsidze's best win? Khomitsky? Langford? He did well against N'Dam, but at best that was a draw, maybe a one point win, and that's a stretch. In reality, Avtandil's best win was over Douglas. Fine, Spike doesn't have a marquee win, Fitzgerald and Quigley while decent wins, neither are world beaters, but do you really think Douglas would beat Saunders or Eubank Jr.? Not a chance IMO. I don't think O'Sullivan can swarm Douglas as effectively as AK, but I do think he has more one punch power, so maybe he doesn't need to, I think if Gary lands half as many shots on Douglas as AK did, then I think that may just be enough to do the job.
Douglas lost or drew when he stepped up as well, and has beaten no more people of note than Spike has.
Szili/Cornflake/Munguia trumps Hall/Quigley/Fitzgerald? Eh. Not by much, if any, I'd say. I'm pretty sure Hall at the very least beats all three of Douglas' victims (even though he's a natural 154lber; both Cornflake and Sepulturero are career welters) Where are people getting the impression that Douglas has ever beaten anyone? Whom on his record am I missing?
Douglas could outbox Spike, though; he's quite a bit more skilled, and faster. I'd say that is the second most likely outcome after Douglas getting KTFO (depends on whether he is defensively sound enough to avoid the onslaught from a fit & determined - if slow & basic - Spike for a full 10) Very similar, nigh unsplittable resumes, however. Not sure how anyone could see it any differently.
I agree. Very hard to split them. Douglas a bit slicker and quicker, spike more power....its poised no doubt. If spike comes in fit enough to put it on Douglas from the start for 3 mins a round he just might pull it off.
Great little fight here... First instinct is Spike by stoppage will have to sit on it a bit though. Still bummed about the fight with Rosado being canceled!
Yep. Antoine is faster on both trigger and reflexively, and has the potential to be slicker (but not always the good sense to avoid getting sucked into brawls), while Gary has the edge in power and, I think more importantly, chin.
very good summery, yet i still think douglas deserves a far higher ranking. he beat two very capable and unbeaten fighter in szili and lamanna and Held the very underrated (and world class!!!) soro to a draw. he also beat les sherrington (35-7) and luca messi ( 37-9 ...a badly faded former world title Challenger). and one big difference: when douglas stepped up to world class, he Held his own vs khurdzidze and drew with the soro. when o´sullivan stepped up, he got schooled. bottom line: douglas Looks like a real Talent/prospect. o´sullivan Looks like a fake who´s only here cause he is irish and has a nice fake record. douglas by clear UD.
Who is more hungry in an even contest ? Spike has two fists and a chance to get some financial stability, I believe his spirit heart and sole will fly with every punch .Douglas has had a stable boxing life so far .Seen as a prospect surrounded by those "friends" telling him he's the next one V a fighter knowing this could be his last chance .It's a true pure fight .The winner gets a top 10 ranking and is closer to glory .The loser starts again .I believe Spike will give more just because he has too , he must and Douglas doesn't seem to have that dog inside of him . Spike by a big KO
