How would an early 1940's Louis do against Sanders, a southpaw with power? Could the Sanders who plastered Wlad and staggered Vitali do what Buddy Baer and Tony Galento couldn't do and put Louis away and change the course of heavyweight history by taking the championship away from a prime Louis?

On paper it should be a very straightforward win for Louis.

    But....

    Louis hated southpaws.

They were the only fighters that he purposefully avoided.

If Sanders had been around in his era, he would have waited for Sanders to lose, and then he would have fougth whoever had beaten him.

    That could make things interesting.

Blackburn avoided southpaws ,he told Louis no orthodox fighter looked good against one. Sanders
had the hand-speed and power to pose problems for anyone but he was very upright so I think Louis would find his chin at some point.

Frankly I'd favour Sanders in this one. Longer reach, bigger guy, hit as hard as heck and had the accuracy and handspeed to go with it. I'm guessing that he lands first. Sanders loved a brawl so Louis should give him one; in my opinion that's Joe's best chance and if he got his own heavy artillery to land things could change quickly. I can't see this one going longer than 3 rounds whoever wins.

Were there many southpaws around at that time?

Could Louis defeat him in a rematch?

There's no case to be made for Sanders. The man had no defense whatsoever and stood square on with his chin in the air.

It would be an exact replica of the Nate Tubbs fight.

No, they were drowned at birth back then.

You had Melio Bettina, and Lee Q Murray.

Jack Roper was a switch hitter I understand.

None of them were at a high point long enough to force the issue.

Of course if the the era had been riddled with southpaws, Louis might have grasped the nettle, and learned the perfect method like he always did.

Louis visited the canvas from lesser fighters than Sanders although Louis did not stay down, he would from the mauling Sanders would give him.

Who put Louis down, who was legitimately a lesser fighter than Sanders?

    Enlighten me!

    Didn't Galento knock him down?

    Didn't Braddock knock him down?

    Didn't Schmelling knock him down?

    Yes, they did.

Galento was the #1 contender at one point.

    Braddock was the lineal champion.

Schmeling is still on some top 20 lists.

All of these guys, are greater fighters than Sanders, who is basically a one hit wonder!

Sandes would win by knock out.
He is faster, hit harder and have a granite chin, and he see whre you are open..
    stylistic a nightmare for Louis
