The excuse has been they sold out the small theatre. I think the truth is that neither guy is a big public sell, and also Arum doesn't want it to look like a circus fight, if people see the size disparity between the two boxers. You can disregard what some of the fools on this forum say. Lomachenko was Nicholas Walters height at least. He was about three inches taller than Russell Jr. Rigondeaux is shorter than Russell Jr.

Everybody it seems want to live off the reputation that the sport of boxing has and coast by fighting bums. But boxing is losing it's shine. People don't care about it anymore. The well has run dry. You can't just win a paper title anymore and start collecting cash or putting fans in the seats because you have a title. Unless you are Mexican and eat punches to the face just for shits and giggles. I swear the Mexican fans will go to their grave supporting anybody who walks their opponent down.

Like you said it's time to go back to fighting the best and putting on a show. Fans have had it.

HBO hasn't been nearly as effective in marketing boxers since the 1990s in my view.

Sometime after that, for whatever reason, their ability to market their marquee names suffered. Floyd & Pac being exceptions who received crossover appeal.

I think with a better angle, HBO could have done a better job selling many fighters since then, particularly the Klitschkos.

Pacquiao wasn't even particularly marketed well IMO. He was relegated to undercard/replacement fighter status until he was brought in as a relatively light touch for Barrera. They didn't even know how to pronounce the guys name. And his interviews pretty much blowed when was just starting out headlining his own cards because he could barely speak English. It wasn't until the DLH fight that he became a crossover fighter. And at that point HBO were just like here is a guy coming up from Flyweight going for 6, 7, 8 titles, can he do it? His marketing was never that good.

Pacquiao was the perfect storm of being very good, entertaining and lucky. He had an embarrassment of riches to choose from. His weight classes were littered with good/great fighters during the time he campaigned in them. He always put on a show. He usually won his biggest fights. And just when you thought he couldn't move up in weight anymore he did it again and won the fight and usually with a KO.

You can look at a guy like Lomachenko and think even if he wanted to do what Pacquiao did he can't. Because the Featherweight division went from being by far the most stacked division in boxing to just another division. And the champions at 135, 140 and 147 were good, but not great which helped Pac move up and become an 8 division titlist.

The fact this fight isn't being marketed properly is frustrating and infuriating. The fact it's on ESPN and free (at least in the US) is encouraging because the sport needs more people to see fights like this and I think or at least hope the sport recognized that so put it on ESPN. Why they aren't doing more to generate interest is beyond me, maybe they think it won't return on the investment they make into..... Befuddling. Obviously everyone from the promoters, to the TV channels, to the fighters, trainers and advisors, all of them maximize profits the more interest is generated in the sport. Boxers themselves and their trainers get paid an embarrassingly small amount for all but the biggest fights, so it pretty much comes down to the promoters and TV channels to take the risk and invest in the sport and how it's perceived by the general public. Those types of people generally have the toughest time parting with money and are for the most part ridiculously rich anyways.

If the sport is gonna save itself, the more fights on free television the better, regardless of how the fights are promoted. Live stream them on the interwebz, don't block the fights from being uploaded to youtube, I mean, get the fights seen, at least the good ones. While your at it, make better and more competitive fights, more compelling fights, weed out as much corruption from the sport as you can and come up with a better scoring system so those who see the fights don't get frustrated and walk away feeling "had."

Hate to say it, boxing has nobody to blame but itself for how poorly the sport is perceived by the general public - at least professional boxing. So much corruption, poor matchmaking, poor scoring system, just a **** ton of problems it has brought upon itself. The sport has evolved, the fighters have evolved, they did their part. Western audiences never woke up one day and collectively said "ya, nah, we don't like violence anymore, that doesn't entertain us, just gonna smoke some weed and move to Vermont, hug a tree and live out of a Volkswagen van, thanks though." I mean, it's friggin people getting popped in their friggin faces for ****'s sake!!!! That sells itself!!!

If you're a drug dealer and have great drugs, give samples of said great drugs to drug addicts. Voila, all the friggin work you had to do. That's it. Good products, or at least people getting KTFO'd - should be a forgone conclusion and not need to be sold to anyone. People go LOOKING for it!!!!!!

Curious as to why they have gone that route. Ive heard that plenty have unsubscribed from ESPN because of it.
    I know i would.

Indeed a great point. The odds are long for Rigo to entertain, but you can can't score without taking the shot. I'm a shooter son, I shoot!

You're brother must be one of the rare fans today who appreciate defense.

I personally appreciate defense and the many styles you can employ it, but Rigondeaux is too rich for my taste and the vast majority of spectators.

USTV boycotted so many good European fighters including the Klitschkos....................Roid Jones refused to fight Michalczewski, so when I finally got to see Michalczewski fight I understood why....................he was really good fighter.....................we are missing so very many good fights in America............remember, it's the world title, not the American title.......................HBO refuses to show some really good fights only to show a mismatch with a house fighter fighting a wino from the alley! We have to watch Wilder fight winos from the alley when the fans know that Wilder is a fraud. All that talk about fighting Joshua, Wilder knows better...........he would get knocked out! Wilder is Primo Carnera, watch the movie "The Harder They Fall" Humphrey Bogart's last movie.................yes, the story of Wilder and Carnera...................although the movie was made in 1956.............

Ever since HBO refused to put Pacquiao vs Vargas on PPV, Arum threw a tantrum and decided he didn't need HBO, so he took his fighters and put them on ESPN instead. Arum recently said that Peter Nelson (the head of HBO Sports) was an amateur and blablabla.
