I'd say Patterson was better than Walcott and Charles.

Definitely not. Walcott and Charles were much more skilled. Patterson probably has the edge in power and slight in speed, that's it.

No way Patterson could have done to Louis what Walcott did. He would have been stopped by Marciano in the first half too.

At that point in their careers i tend to agree that Patterson in his mid 20s was better than ancient Walcott and declined Charles

Very well written! Il go for Rocky late round stoppage after surviving a early onslaught and possibly a knockdown.
I think Marciano savvy and tough enough to pull it off.

Patterson is hard to gauge. His best wins could be on par with some of Charles and Walcotts best wins but which Floyd did Liston beat? Was Floyd as good or as driven for Sonny as Floyd in the Ingo revenge night when meeting Sonny? Or was Floyd less than the guy against Sonny who had to get off the floor to beat a bald headed Amateur? There must be a reason why Floyd turned up to fight Sonny with a false moustache, false beard, glasses and Homberg hat disguise neatly packed in his gym bag. And I don’t think it is a positive reason.

Liston at his best, when he was hungry and active, rearranges Rockys face busting him up, dropping him, and keepin him at bay with sledgehammer blows until the ref stops it around the 7th.

The lazy past it liston who just wanted to drink and bang thots rather than fists gets stopped late, or he just says to hell with this and tak a dive knowing he gets paid anyway.

Didnt he have the disguise AFTER he lost because he was ashamed of losing the title?

Yes, I just hope you realise the guys Sonny were beating bore no relation to the level of fighter Rocky was during this period.

Liston certainly hammers most 189lb shorter guys with a bit of ability but Rocky was a very unusual, exception to many rules. And we didn’t see him decline enough to be certain of anything.

It’s hard to be great looking bad. Rocky looked bad and always won. So it’s very difficult to know anything for sure. Rocky was never knocked out. He dominated championship class against better men than Sonny beat.

Just my usual on this one gents:

Liston has a style advantage and a size advantage. Those are huge advantages. I'd need to see big differences in speed, power, or technical ability in favour of the smaller fighter to make a pick against him in these situations and I don't see one. In fact, I think Liston was technically better.

So an unusually easy pick for me: Liston by stoppage.

What's a style advantage when it's at home? Someone who has a better style to look at? I'm new to this site but Iv never heard this expression used in boxing before and iv been around boxing all my life.

I think the workate of marciano would be to mutch for Sonny, who realy was a bully, but when big cat williams start punching non stop, liston doesnt look realy good, but he knew that williams would be dead after the first round becauso his stamina sucks, so what would he do agains a punching mashine like rocky ? i think he would quit after 6-7 rounds, just becauso he was a bully and doesnt have the biggest heart.

You've never heard the term "style advantage"?? What about "styles make fights?"

The style advantage here is swarmer (Rocky) against slugger (Sonny).

It's the best known style advantage in boxing, i'd suggest, and perhaps the most difficult to overcome. The swarmer wants to move in and apply pressure; the puncher is delighted with this because he usually has to engineer this situation by stalking.
