His trainer Jim McDonnel really pushes him, it is like cross-fit to the extreme

...all that training cannot be good for youneither.

It never stopped me enjoying him or even liking him (bumped into him at the Peacock in '09 when he was there for Mayweather, nice enough fellow), but James always was a bit of an aggrandized fancy Dan. Not entirely without substance, but perceptibly flawed. I remember being particularly nonplussed when a number of British forum guys came to the conviction that he would be the one to topple Andre Ward, apparently on the basis of him knocking out Paul Smith.

I feel like I should be more surprised by Truax tossing him the L than I am, just because Truax is so pedestrian. But DeGale's always been prone to lazy spells and to being outhustled when playing the cutie on the ropes (which he just isn't all that good at).

He did take a heavy beating from Jack and is getting longer in the tooth now, though. Could be he also didn't prepare too diligently for a guy like Truax. Those factors, compounded with stylistic deficiencies, can add up to an upset defeat.

I don't really have a problem with him losing. These things happen after injuries and long lay offs. But what I do have a problem with is the smack he talked in the build up. He talked about himself beating Groves, Eubank, Smith, Benevidez, Ramirez in 2018 without ever considering that he had to get past Truax first. It was disrespectful and ultimately he looks like an idiot because of it.

That Groves rematch is one of those cases of excessive marination. Though I suppose you can argue there hasn't been a clear juncture where it was crying out to be inked, it would've been smart for them to have gotten their heads together and made it happen by now.

In a way it's a good thing he lost to Truax, because I wouldn't have enjoyed watching the beating that DeGale would've been subjected to at the hands of Benavidez. Things would've got real painful for him when he backed up against the ropes, those vicious uppercuts and hooks from Benavidez would've resulted in him getting brutally KTFO.

The ropes are the last place you wanna be on when you're in there with Benavidez

DeGale has been blighted with a lot of injury woes throughout his career and he's proved the size of his heart in numerous instances when he's been injured during fights. Something was definitely ''mash up'' in his face last night and at one point after Truax had him on the ropes and caught him clean with 3 or 4 big shots, culminating in an uppercut IIRC, I thought he was about to get stopped. But he managed to weather the storm.

Badou put a beating on him regardless of the outcome. That definitely took a lot out of him

He lost to Bute and Jack as well. Great job by the corrupt powers that be keeping this guy afloat way longer then his actual ability, glad they made some bucks off him.

First start by saying like DeGale. On his day he’s a very good boxer.

But if I’m honest, going as far back to when he fought Mouhoumadi, I’ve fought his defence is shocking.
Few fights later he looked like a machine against Brandon Gonzalez. To me, it looked like he’d polished up certain aspects. But since winning the belt again Dirrell he gotten progressively worse.

For the life of me I don’t know why he/Mcdonell seem confident with him sitting on the rope every damn fight. He literally gives away rounds for free.

God forbid he ever sat on the ropes against the likes of Froch or Kessler. Just look what Froch did to Bute. I mean, Eubank would absolutely murder him on the ropes. No way DeGale would’ve left that ring standing.

    So here’s my take:

    A) either DeGale is surround by ‘yes’ men and they simply fail at all corners to implement anything effective. He’s naturally confident And maybe that gives the impression that he’s ready

    B) Jim McDonnell is an AVERAGE coach who doesn’t have anything to offer DeGale outside of him sleeping on the ropes taking unnecessary shots in the eventual hope of him coming on strong or having already built up a lead, that he’ll eventually get the W

The larger bit is my personal theory to what you have written

Sadly I think Degale is past best and that tough fights have caught up on him.
I think Degale has been good. He travelled to the USA to beat Dirrell, travelled to Canada to beat Bute, travelled back to the USA to beat Medina, travelled back to the USA to face Jack in a unification in a draw. I think travelling like that several fights in a row can cause a sort of fatigue.

Degale with so much talent but he seems to get dragged into the trenches and I have a bit of a theory with why.
Degale doesnt seem to try and push his opponents back and with his style gets made to move alot, so I think he is often working twice as hard as his opponents and then needs to rest on the ropes for a bit when he is tired after having to move so much.
His opponents can stay more in centre ring making Degale do full circles around them.

I think there will be a familiar situation to what fans have seen before where when a talented champ gets dethroned suddenly other names are looking to face the new champ when they didnt seem as interested in the previous champ. I expect suddenly many opponents who havent been overly chasing Degale will suddenly be looking for a shot at Truax
