190 lb Holyfield vs Oscar Bonavena

See, I don't think there was such a massive gap between that Holyfield and the later one. The Holyfield weighing in at 190 weighed 200 for the actual fight. Holyfield as bigger, much more skilled, even tougher, and - most importantly - was much better at winning boxing matches.

 

Holyfield was rehydrating to 200? Never read that tbh.

Like I said, I don't think cruiser Holyfield had enough experience to deal with Bonavena. He could certainly outwork him but Bonavena could make Holyfield look very bad and steal a decision.

Not out of the question for Bonavena to beat Holyfield, especially since he'd have a slight size advantage (10-15 lbs or so?) over a CW Holyfield, but I think Bonavena winning would be an upset, at least if it was vs the Holyfield of Qawi 2 and onward. I can see Bonavena handling and would even favor him over the Holyfield of Qawi 1 and prior. But as of the 2nd Qawi fight, Holyfield noticeably improved.

 

In my list of sub 200 pound fighters who would've had a reasonable chance for an upset over Ali, CW Holyfield makes the list. Ali likely beats him, but Holyfield could surprise us. Frazier would probably beat CW Holyfield, but Holyfield could make him look bad in the interim.

 

With all due respect Bonavena made them look bad in real life. Not in a fantasy match up.

 

Joe bugner made them look bad, and he wouldn't beat Holyfield in a million years. Hell, norton beat Ali and most people would pick holy to beat norton.

 

We're talking about Bonavena who was very different stylistically to Bugner and Norton. Bugner only won 4 rounds against Ali in their first fight and 3 rounds off of Frazier. Bonavena won 5 rounds off of Ali and according to the AP won 6 rounds. Ali even said it was his toughest fight up to that point. Against Frazier, Bonavena won a decision from one judge and knocked him down 2 times.

Bugner came nowhere near to doing that. Norton would definitely beat 190 Holyfield. Without a doubt.

 

I'm confused on the above, are you saying we can't view somebody's resume to deduce things by it? Nobody uses the above unless specified, because we have fights after the above since their career kept going after the fights listed, just like Oscar's continued. One could say, the version of Ali that fought Liston, but if Ali is simply put in the thread, many of his fights can be critiqued for purposes of figuring out a winner. Same thing here, Oscar doesn't need a signature win in order to review his resume, but his resume is under review; and if said resume is lacking certain wins, that can certainly be called into question

I think the Bonavena who fought Frazier would give the cruiserweight Holyfield all kinds of hell, not because Evander could not outbox him but because Evander was like Dempsey .. when hit he saw red and slugged .. if he slugged w Oscar in his 190 days he might lose ..
