Best old time heavyweight to beat prime Tyson

    What old time heavyweight would stand the best chance to defeat Tyson circa 1988? While I'm not saying he would beat Tyson, obviously a primi Joe Louis would have to be at the top of the list. So what pre 60s heavy would you have in mind?

    Like any old vs present we have to look at what rules they fighting by, number of rounds, if it under modern rules/regulations over 12 rounds then i would struggle to see any pre 60s boxers standing a chance other than as you state Louis, it would be a brief but fun to watch bout with Dempsey though.

    If got to throw a fighter into the mix i would nominate prime Jefferies, as he was a tough sonnaofabitch, could absorb massive amounts of punishment, and would in no way be psyched out by Tyson. So if bout over the extended number of rounds of Jefferies time, how would Tyson cope if Jefferies still standing in 20th round?

    Joe Louis is the best bet. Probably the only bet.

    Edit: I'll add Liston to the mix of old heavyweights.

    Just want to add that Louis -vs- Liston would be the greatest heavyweight battle of all time, next to Tyson-Ali.

    Ezzard Charles or Marciano probably distant 2nd's, but I wouldn't bet on them.

    Yeah, those are 2 possibilities. How good of possibilities is debatable, but compared to most of their contemporaries, they'd have a better chance.

    No one is picking a prime, pre-ban Ali to beat Tyson? :eeek:

    Dempsey, Johnson, Louis, Ali. Everyone else gets KO'd quickly.
