Merchant has literally never once been any more "in" boxing than Kellerman. He came at it from the exact same perspective, a journalist, difference being that Max actually set foot in the gym at least a few times in his youth, took a few blows and kept trucking, not sure the same can be verified of Larry?

Also, Larry was a hack journalist. Max has been earning his accolades since he was barely outta puberty, and had climbed to as high a position as Merchant at half the age he did. So yeah.

I doubt Merchant owns half as much boxing footage as Kellerman does, privately. He doesn't really know much, at all. He was just an opinionated blowhard that thought he was insightful and literary, loved the sound of his own voice, and only actually liked one specific type of boxer and formed preconceived biases based on his stylistic preference in every single fight he ever called.

    Good riddance to him.

Atlas at least was involved in boxing, more than either of them, but I wouldn't say he knows as much as Kellerman. He was a disciple of Cus, but he was never a pimple on his teacher's ass. He never accomplished anything as a cornerman that couldn't have been attributed to the fighter being good enough to have done it without him. He, like Merchant, loved listening to himself sermonize and had very rigid (and wrong) ideas about the sport that informed his ability (or lack thereof) to score and commentate objectively.

He's a bitter old psychotic bully (who once held a gun in a child's face) who is just mad that he didn't amount to **** in boxing, and so has reveled in the glow of this exalted "expert" position that ESPN helped him cultivate over the years, with ass-kissers like Tessitore seated beside him.

    Good riddance to him too.

I’ve disagreed with a lot of Teddy’s views over the years but I always respected his knowledge even if he came off buffoonish at times.

That said, I think he didn’t toe the line when it came to Pac/Horn and definitely not after GGG/Alvarez. He kept it real and spoke for the disappointed fan. He really seems fed up with the corruption.

We all know it’s a corrupt sport, but never this blatant. Each opportunity they have to grow the sport, they give it a black eye.

ESPN sucks, this is nothing new.

But there's also a good aspect of this story. It means ESPN takes boxing quite seriously.

Actually, Larry Merchant was a member of Cloverlay, the company that financed the first 10 years of Joe Frazier's career when turned pro after the 1964 Olympics.

And he covered the sport of boxing for the Philadelphia Daily News for decades (he's in the famous photo of Ali standing over Liston in Lewiston) and he's a member of the Boxing Hall of Fame.

So I don't know how the hell he wasn't a part of the sport.

On the other hand, Max Kellerman wanted to be a rapper until he was in his 20s. So I don't know what the hell you're talking about.

Merchant was a significant player in the sport for nearly 15 years (helping to bankroll Frazier, writing about boxing, working as a boxing announcer for NBC) before Max Kellerman was even born in 1979.
