Buddy Baer looked better the first time around against Louis. And despite Galento's physique, he probably could deal with the run of the mill AJ or Wilder victim. Plus, it's not as if many of the the heavies of the past 15 years look any better shirtless than Galento did.

Physique doesn't count nearly as much in punching as technique and speed. My man Sanders never had a physique to write home about and he could hit like a truck...

I know that, but I do think that physique is why many believe that Louis can't hit nearly as hard as AJ or Wilder. Even though, Louis was built like/weighed as much as many of the bodybuilders/strongmen of his time. Marvin Eder was only about 200 pounds but insanely strong, yet would be small compared to the modern bodybuilders of today while AJ would fit right in if he competed in a modern day bodybuilding contest. http://70sbig.com/blog/2011/06/marvin-eder/

I think if a 200 pound bodybuilder can be as strong as a 250 pound bodybuilder, it's possible for a 200 pound heavyweight puncher to hit as hard as a 250 pound heavyweight puncher.

I'm not sure if you're serious or joking with this post. Which wins of Buddy's give you the impression he's analogous to Lennox compared to the run of the mill fighters AJ and Wilder are beating? Second, what about him on film, even gives you the slightest impression he's anything even remotely special?

It was a metaphorical post when I said "he might as well been Lennox Lewis" not that he was literally like Lewis. I wouldn't pick Stiverne or Molina to beat Buddy Baer.

Ummm, I also wouldn't feel comfortable picking Bear to beat Stiverne or Molina.... We can go that way also...

Not taking anything away from the Great Joe Louis but Baer looked terrible. Gave up his height advantage, kept his left very low against one one the hardest right hands ever, slow, etc.

Anybody with two eyes can see that Buddy was garbage that night, and frankly, wasn't all that good to begin with.

But you see he was the genuine article up to a point.

His power was terrific, indeed the number of heavyweights with more first round knockouts, can be counted on the fingers of one had!

    He beat some legit guys.

I am not certain that he would not have been champion at some point, if Louis had not been around!

anybody with one eye can see Stiverne was more beatable than buddy Baer. You don’t even need two eyes to tell that!!

Passing thought. Stiverne has been a WBC champion.

Say what you like about Baer nobody as bad as Stiverne won a heavyweight title in Buddy’s era.

No fighter looks good getting demolished.

I think that a lot of it had to do with the man in front of him.

I think bodybuilders are kind of a misleading comparison. Real strong people don't look like that, with a few outlying exceptions.
Look at this: This is the men's 2017 world weightlifting championship in the 85 kg weight class (roughly equivalent to boxing's cruiserweight class). Even though they have to make weight most of them aren't exactly ripped and would look no better on a bodybuilding stage than I would.

I would confidently pick the Stiverne of the Arreola or Wilder fights over the Baer that faced Louis the second time. And the result for Baer would be about the same.

    A. Based on what that happened in the real universe?

    B. When will you feel emboldened to make a pick like this, in a fight were your pick will actually be tested?

I'd pick Buddy Baer to have put up more resistance vs Wilder than Stiverne did and at least wobbled Wilder if he landed flush, at least. I'd pick a 1942 Louis the favorite to stop Stiverne, at least that version, in 1 round but I'm not so certain about Wilder stopping Buddy Baer in 1 round.
