The wider British public love boxing. Many though would have better things to do than watch the BBC. Many like me cannot stand their smug, elitist view of the world where they shoehorn in political correctness into everything (to get the plebs minds right or to educate them) I didn’t watch it and I didn’t vote and many other serious boxing fans in the U.K. didn’t either. Frankly who gives a fck about some prize handed out by the BBC? You see that number 3 was a disabled cyclist no one has ever heard of. That’s political correctness for you. Number 2 was a world super bike champion which fits perfectly with the elitist choice. There was even a female cricketer at 9. Again shouldn’t even be on the list, but yet again the BBC is pushing hard an agenda many of us have rejected.
A disabled cyclist no one has heard of You clearly don’t know your sport...he’s a 100m sprinter...does it quicker than anyone on this forum (I’d bet on him to beat aj too) and he’s an amputee...Johnny Peacock is a big star if you follow sport in general... As for why AJ didn’t win, we’ve got a lot of amazing sporting talent in Britain and personally I think I can name several more deserving sportsman who finished behind AJ. Ronnie O’Sullivan matched the all time record for majors in snooker (18) and if anyone has a personality it’s him, yet he didn’t even make the shortlist... Mo Farah put an end to an incredible track career, one of the greatest long distance runners in history...a deserving winner for any sports fan... Lewis Hamilton secured his 4th world championship and the all time pole record to secure his status as one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time and won a genuine fight with Vettel... Chris Froome won his fourth Tour de France and became the first Brit to win the giro d’italia and has secured his own place as one of cyclings ATGs. AJ beat Klitschko when Fury had already done that...it hasn’t secured him a place as one of the greatest boxers of all time so tbh I’m suprised he was favourite. I voted and I didn’t vote for AJ... Boxers have won it and done well before so it’s nothing to do with political correctness. That’s insulting to the great sportsmen and women we have in this country...
If all of your fights are on PPV then your exposure isn't going to be as good as Mo Farah's who everybody sees on the BBC. Pointless award though tbh.
When AJ was speaking and the camera went on Eddie, you could see it in his eyes, he was dying to get up there and take over the mic, he had that look on his face that had "WOT ABARRRTTT MEE" written all over it..
Over saturation, I believe we see too much about him now, when he first burst on the scene after the Olympics it was all a novelty, people got to know him a little bit but now a lot of those people are getting bored. There is nothing new to learn or listen to at the moment, also the recent instagram DM's didn't go totally unnoticed even if the media decided it was not worth talking about. A lot of people mentioned them to me because they know I'm a boxing fan and to my surprise it wasn't well received, I didn't think much of it but some took great offence and mentioned the media blackout. Also when people become very famous people go back and read about them, they want to know their journey, they want to see what inspired them and what drove them and AJ's story while positive in the sense he has turned his life around isn't overly pleasant and again some people will see him in a different light. That said, with Sky behind him and the whole hype machine in full flow AJ will still sell out stadiums, still do huge PPV numbers but I think the average British sports fan who isn't a boxing fan will start to turn away. Until Joshua gets beat, that's the next stage, he has reached the top, sports fans love to see people reach the top but then they turn, they want to see the fall and then they want to see if they have what it takes to come back, it might just be a British thing but we seem to love a loser or somebody just taken down a peg and I think that's the period we are about to go in to with Joshua.
As I've said before, the lack of regular terrestrial coverage in the UK of boxing does hurt it's profile. To be fair it's better than it was say before 2011 but without the BBC/ITV fully involved Joshua or any other boxer is going to find it hard to win SPOTY. It can just be luck however, in 2011 Mark Cavendish won the award somehow despite not actually winning a major tour. Farah finished third that year by the way.
No ... its simple the award is to the personality of the year not the sporting achievment of the year. People vote for their favourite athlete of the year nothing more nor less. The person who wins it always deserves to win it as that is who the people voted for to THEIR personality of the year.
Hamilton would have been my vote, the man has consistently dominated in F1 compared to any other athletes in other sports get the public never seem to warm to him. Aj should have barely made the shortlist especially with the recent controversial tweets which admins like Professor have to great lengths to suppress from being discussed on here.
We also had Jess Pennis for the Lifetime Achievement Award which was selected by the BBC (UK Govt give the nod). Surely it would have been more appropriate to give this award to the person who has graced his sport for more than 30 years, breaking all records and now playing his last tournament before retiring - Mr Phil Taylor of Stoke.
It's a wonder A.J came fourth anyway, what with the BBC's stance on boxing. Farrah must have notched up a few extra nods with the armchair voters following his cosy family satellite interview!
If AJ fought more this year, I think he would have had more of a chance. Two fights in one year is really disappointing. A huge win against Klitschko then a mediocre win against Takam. AJ seems more interested in making money than actually proving he is the best. And still only 20 fights. At this rate, he will retire having only fought 25 times! He keeps calling out Tyson Fury who is massively inactive! It's getting boring now. Clear up the division in 2018 by fighting at least 4 times, Wilder, Parker, Povetkin, then Fury at the end of the year if he is ready, then I'd consider voting for him. Other contenders for the award have done much more in the single year.
I don't think AJ deserved the 1/10 odds on favourite tag. What fury did to Klit 2 years ago was a much bigger feat... AJ will deserve it if he unifies all the belts
True but still surprising he didn't do better and perhaps a slightly worrying indicator that his popularity might have been affected by all of the 'Mugabe is great/ black people are superior' nonsense that was on his social media. Weirdly I've met people who have seen that and now believe there was something more to the Khan story. I didn't think Joshua would be able to give Fury a run for his money in the weird stakes but he's certainly proven me wrong.
