In fairness though, as ridiculous as Don Turner sounds in these interviews, it's possible that the interviews don't reflect his abilities as a trainer. Of course, the Holyfield cut man fiasco seems more directly relevant to that issue...
Why not use his example of a truly special fighter who would expose today's ATGs, Harold Dade? http://boxrec.com/en/boxer/53
Maybe dude was skilled. I can imagine people having similar sentiments towards Emmanuel Augustus in the future. http://boxrec.com/en/boxer/6887
I'm not going to venture an opinion of his ability as a trainer.I don't know the man. I'm just a bit perplexed as to why nearly all the fighters that were originally listed as having been trained by him do not have him credited in that capacity onBox Rec
And anyone in the future who disparages MAB and Chocolatito caliber greats while implying that Augustus was equal or superior to them would be roundly and rightly ridiculed.
Yeah, I looked him up on boxrec. Fought some great guys. Only a ridiculous ****-talking sentimentalist hopelessly biased toward the past would praise him while clowning guys like Roman Gonzalez and Barrera though.
He said the same when talking about the feather weights , he said Saddler and Pep were great and that ,compared to them Sanchez and Barrera were ordinary ,fair enough, both Saddler and Pep were all time great feathers, but he then goes on to put another name in their company.Hogan Kid Bassey. With all due respect to both Bassey and Mr Turner I don't think Bassey can credibly be linked with either, nether would I bracket him as being in the class of MAB or Sanchez.
I'm aware of that That would be for the Holyfield fight with Tyson, what do you think Turner could teach a 34 years old ex Olympic Gold, ex cruiserweight champion and twice heavyweight champion at that point in his career. We know he persuaded him to dispense with a cut man for the Moorer fight and we know that he thought Holyfield adding 20lbs to his frame was," bullsh*t", we also know that Holyfield had a ballet/dance coach , and a strength /conditioning coach, plus a dietician so I'm just wondering what was left for Turner to do? apart from towel him off and rinse his mouthpiece?
That is actually fair though if you think about it. All styles have flaws. Cross arms are good defending against uppercuts, good to reply with hooks but not so much for right hands over the top. Shoulder roll is good for bringing up a left hook out of line of vision while offering the shoulder as what used to be called “half guard”. But as Don says hit a man on the arm it can destabilise all of that poise.
You have to wonder why other trainers and world champions waste their time doing pad work if,as Mr Turner says it is bullsh*t? Here are Sugar Ray Leonard,Shane Mosley and Roberto Duran,Golovkin and Abel Sanchez,Waldimir Klitschko and Jonathon BanksMcClellan andEmmanuel Steward,Oscar DelaHoya and Freddie Roach wasting their time, someone should have told them it was bull sh*t! DonTurner says Charlie Goldman was his first trainer and that", pad work is bullsh*t". The trainer credited with being the first to utilise the pads? Charlie Goldman!Shown here on the pads with Rocky Marciano. This content is protected
Wonder how he felt after sustaining a cut eye against Moorer and his cornerman Mr Turner ,having persuaded him to dispense with the$25,000 expense of a cut man[Ace Marotta] , being unable to stop the bleeding? "With blood still dripping from above his left eye, Evander Holyfield agreed that the cut had been a "big factor" in being dethroned as the two-thirds heavyweight champion by Michael Moorer last night in a majority 12-round decision. "It," he said of the blood, "kept getting in my eyes."
