Nothing wrong with any of that. I remember most of us thought the same thing after Lewis fought Briggs. Lewis looked shaky and Briggs no great shakes. What went on once Evander and Lewis fought is a different matter.
Just like everybody else. Gil Clancy, Dundee, Lou Duva, Arcel and Manny himself. It’s never their fault either. Manny even had the rogue leg massaging excuse that did for Hearns against Hagler... And t be fair to all of them, in most cases if their strategy was carried out, if the fighter was good enough to carry it out against a better fighter, it would never have been any of their fault.
I don't think Dundee was a great trainer, and I think Duva was often a liability in a corner. Clancy was bonafide imo
I find it interesting that this says he left Cincinnati for New York in 1969 yet some say he saw Marciano fight ? Turner says he was good enough for Grant until Grant lost, then it was his fault, he may well be right on that score.
Was the leg massage an excuse or the truth? Ray Arcel said any trainer is only as good as his fighter.
My evil narrative where people in the boxing world are respected and whose characters are not defamed? The horror!!
Your narrative where you musn't have any of your statements questioned and ,if they are, you throw an indignant hissy fit accusing people of having an agenda . So sad. ps Turner coached Kovalev up until 2010 for his first 10 fights, until Kovalev beat Dannell Boone in his first 8 rounder, then his services were dispensed with. He was returned to the fold for the second Ward fight as an assistant to John David Jackson. Why don't you get off your a*se and do some digging ,"Little Boy Put Upon."You might actually widen your knowledge!
Now THIS is a great source, especially the part that described how Holyfield chose him as a trainer. Which wasn't based on the right kind of merit at all. To follow the rabbit hole all the way, we must know how he linked up with Holmes. The part when Don said "Sugar Ray Robinson didn't need music," made me laugh aloud. Dude seems like he has never changed! It is interesting that this article says he started training in 69. That means he put in 26 or so years of work before being with Holyfield.
It does say that, but he didnt open a gym until 1994,so was he freelancing in another's gym or working as an assistant? He was only with Holmes for the Mercer,McCall and Neilsen fights I believe, one excellent win for Larry and two rather predictable losses given his age.
Saddest case of projection ever. You took offense to the innocuous nature of this thread, and started spazzing out with long winded rants about Turners credibility. Then you had a delusion where this thread was aimed at you. Your narrative doesn't even NEED to be questioned for you to go into Angry Grandpa mode. All Mcvey needs is a paranoid thought. Pathetic. Now he wants a cookie because he learned a fact about Turner. Adding to the knowledge pool of boxing isn't enough. He needs a pat on the back too. When did our wise elders turn into attention seeking babies?
What facts have you provided about Turner? NONE WHATSOEVER ! I've learned a few things about the man , because I've tried to educate myself on him. You have supplied us with jack sh*t in the way of facts, just a lot of whining . I'm not angry, I keep telling you this, but you don't seem to grasp it. What I've done is ask questions which you wont/cant answer and that has got up your little nose. Simple as.
Perhaps dislike is the wrong description however when a trainer makes an outright statement like that about another professional in the game then they definitely don't rate them. When a trainer states that the best chance his guy has of winning is because the other trainer is a liability then you can't get much more insulting than that. When several ATG make similar statements then the boxing world takes note. I am sure that Turner may have some very good points and insight however his weakness, arrogance, appears known by other trainers, fighters and exploited - not good IMO if you are under his guidance. Exactly the sort of trainer a guy like Steward can out think.
That is a matter of opinion. Steward was without doubt a grand trainer. But Turner is a fine coach too. There is a temptation for trainers to exaggerate when being interviewed by people who know less than they do. If you want to trip up any trainer by looking to be that literal you can do it with all of them. I have listened to Turner in these videos and he really is not being outlandish at all. Mostly he is using examples to make a point. Padwork is a training aid. Useful but not the be all end all. Saying padwork is bull is simply a reaction. Same with everything else, it’s all justified in the context of the conversation. A lot of the time I think he is really just emphasising that you can’t rule out anything old. Perhaps over emphasising to make that point. Anybody in boxing gets that.
