BILLY JOE SAUNDERS is waiting for Canelo Alvarez to rematch Gennady Golovkin, so he can fight the winner.

Saunders, the WBO middleweight champion, put in a spectacular display to defend his title against David Lemieux last Saturday (December 16) and is now in a strong position to secure a showdown with a star name. It’s satisfying for promoter Frank Warren, who has guided Saunders since he turned professional.

“It took a long time for him to suddenly become an overnight sensation,” Warren told Boxing News. “We sat down and had a big chat about the future [when Saunders was drifting]. If you’re not training well, you’re not doing these things… Then obviously there was the frustration of the Eubank fight, the pull-out of that [rematch]. We had the contract sent over from Golovkin [for a fight earlier this year] then after the [Danny] Jacobs fight he decided he wasn’t going to fight in June, he wouldn’t until he fought Canelo. Those were frustrations. But that’s boxing. You’ve got to get on with it. It’s frustrating for him. It was frustrating for everybody. I think what Bill’s found, which was missing, was focus and he’s got that focus now. He’s seen the light at the end of the tunnel.”

A world title unification with Golovkin or Canelo would most likely take place in September 2018 and Saunders will fight next earlier next year.

“He’ll be out April/May,” said Warren. “I’d love a really big fight for him but those two guys, it’s a nuisance that we can’t get to them. That bad decision [when Golovkin and Canelo drew] didn’t help. They’d probably have made the rematch anyway.”

The opponent for Saunders in the interim won’t necessarily be Danny Jacobs. “I don’t want to build it into something like we need Jacobs,” Warren said. “What’s in it for us? And if we’re going to do it, it’s going to be on our terms.”

Saunders merits a star name and a big fight. When Amir Khan last fought it was above super-welterweight and for a middleweight world title. Frank Warren would make that fight “in a heartbeat”. But he notes, “It couldn’t be for the title though because he’d have to go get a win.”

Makes sense as a gimme fight, while he awaits the winner of Golovkin-Alvarez 2.

It's a total joke of a fight but those fights have sold quite well in recent years. Alvarez-Khan, Golovkin-Brook, Haye-Bellew (and attempts at a rematch) .... these are jokes fights that did okay.

Khan's a name and he's always willing to step up and get knocked out, bless 'im.

No idea where Khan wants to go with his boxing career, but I doubt it's the middleweight division. the Canelo fight was just a one-off pay day. He earned around £9 million.

I hear what you're saying in that stranger fights have happened, but only because the money's been right. I don't know that BJS-Khan generates the type of money Khan would need, given that he probably gets put to sleep again.

If Khan is looking to risk his health 1 more time for a cash out, it has to be Kell Brook. As much as they hate it, him and his team must know it. I still give that fight an outside chance of happening, because you should never underestimate greed.

Huge difference between losing to BJS and Brook.

Losing to BJS doesn't matter, losing to Brook would make Khan a laughing stock for the remainder of his life.

You can almost see the way this fight would pan out. A boxer with lightning fast hands but whom switches off and ends up sitting in the pocket a fraction too long, against one of the best counter punchers in the game. Giving away height, reach and natural size advantage. It’s a stoppage all day long.

He's only ever done that once against Alvarez.

Hes never ever been an underdog in any other fight. All his other losses and close fights were all cherry picks gone wrong lol.

Not a good fight for Khan. Not enough money for a cash out and would probably get beat by late TKO or decision. Then hes *ucked

I guess, my point was, cash is king.
Khan is in serious danger of being knocked unconscious by either guy.
Therefore, if he's going to fight one of them, he should go with the money fight, which is Kell Brook.
BJS is not a household name. It's high risk for comparatively low reward. So why would Khan want it? He doesn't.

Even then - say he got KO'd by BJS - I reckon the Kell Brook fight would probably still be there for Khan. It would be devalued though.
More to the point, Khan is already damaged goods. His chances of beating Kell would be even lower if he warms up for it by getting KO'd by a middleweight AGAIN.
But anyway, I think there are potential fights for Khan in his own weight class which could make the same/similar money to fighting Billy. Agree with you, BJS makes no sense as a boxing or business decision.

To be honest, I don't think Khan is on BJS's radar either. I don't find the quotes from the article particularly meaningful. Think Frank just got asked the question, so he answered it honestly: if Khan wants to come get KO'd, it can be arranged.

At this point Khan is officially inactive and has only fought once a year for the two years prior.

I would not be going out on a limb here to say Khan is desperate for a big payday, and would jump at this fight.

The fact he went through with that humiliating reality tv show, proves how desperate he is now for money. Khan would now suck a donkey off, if you offered him the right money and incentives.

For BJS it is a no risk fight, because aside from Khans hand speed, he has nothing else going for him and has of course that comedy chin. BJS definitely has the power to lay waste to Amere Con.
