Well he talked about it on his travelling road show. It'd be pretty hard to talk if for a full year with no sleep.

Douglas really looked amazing that night. That was one of the best performances and boxing displays ever by a SHW. And not just because it was tyson who he did that too. If douglas had looked that quick, sharp, combative and mobile against someone like Mercer or Tua on an undercard fight i would have still been very very impressed.

He moved like a welterweight. his punches were quick but with thud. Zero hesitation on the trigger and the accuracy was astounding, almost as if he was practicing on a double end bag.
And even when tyson started hitting him in round 8, 9 and 10 he kept his cool and then finished him off.
People forget that douglas was getting hit and hurt also in the last couple rounds of that fight. Tyson had just taken too much punishment in the first 8 rounds

Round 9 of tyson Holyfield 1. Tyson hurt holyfield pretty good with a right and buckled his back leg. (Watch holyfield closely at 39:35)

in round 10 Holyfield got him with a well timed shot, the same one tyson got him with in round 9(both threw right hands, one guy got there first). By the end of the holyfield and douglas fights tyson simply didnt have enough left. He was outclassed for most of the fight.

The problem with tyson was that he came at his opponents with everything he had from the opening bell. If you come at someone from the opening bell with everything there is simply no way you're going to be stronger in round 9 than in round 1.

In his prime tyson had other tools, footwork, the jab that he could go to to try to cruise to a decision, if he couldnt take someone out early. But once he got away from those things, and started just relying on explosive power, he lost his plan B. Amd because of his lack of size there was nothing he could do other than to keep trying if the initial onslaught didnt work. Problem is that the initial onslaught also happened to be the strongest one so his opponents chances increased exponentially after a few rounds vs past prime tyson.

Has nothing to do with a lack of heart.
Tyson always had mental problems that hindered his career and his life but he wasnt a coward.

Well some on this very thread are saying that, granted they are not very balanced or worth the debate, clearly hate the man so I don’t know why they bother really as I immediately switch off once the insults start.

Others seem a bit more balanced, at least recognising a few of Tyson’s positive attributes, but maybe still unwilling to look at fights such as Ruddock and admit the man had some serious grit.

They will take credit away by calling those fights a walk in the park. You could say Tyson was close to getting knocked out against Ruddock. Why not? Lesser theories have been said about other greats but it’s not seen as revolutionary as the idea Tyson may have been out on his feet but didn’t fold.

All I ask is the decent posters stop calling people with a valid argument for Tyson fan boys and weigh it up fairly.

It can be hard defending the man, he was self destructive. It’s dufficult to help or de fend people like that, they don’t want it. But this just feeds the critics and they end up with plenty of ammunition, and start forgetting the reality. Other wat round two, the fans can get caught up believing Tyson was the best of all time.

A more middle ground needs to be met by the pure haters that make no sense and personally hate Tyson, to the pure fan that can see no wrong.

But at the end of it, Tyson showed true heart and grit in some fights. He might not have come from the brink of loss but he had to dig deeper than some give him credit for...

I find it amazing that people still belive Tyson was beat by a bum that night. Story is not as simple as that is it. Douglas looked great in nearly every department. I don’t belive Tyson was ready for that challenge personally but even if he was I wouldn’t be surprised if he lost.

He had a lot of tools. It's a shame he is yet another wasted talent around that era. At least he has one of the biggest wins in history but he could have been so much more.

Yep. That douglas would have beat alot of other guys as well. That douglas outworks prime Tony Tucker, stops prime foreman and possibly old foreman as well. He also beats Bowe, imo atleast 50/50 with lewis and slight favorite against holmes because of the size and punch variety. Tokyo douglas stops Holyfield if Holy tried to brawl with him the way he tried to brawl with Bowe the first time. Tokyo Douglas loses to a a prime Holyfield 1988-1990 holy if holy boxes smart because of the workrate. Douglas did seem to be tiring at the end of the tyson fight.

Tokyo douglas probably loses to prime frazier because of his workrate, late round stamina and consistency, probably to liston(just a feeling) and definitely to Ali(speed, stamina)

That’s true. Didn’t Joe put Marvis in against Holmes with only 10 fights under his belt? Unfortunately for Joe, Marvis was no Lomachenko.
