I guess that he kind of answered the question himself, by deciding against it.

He would have either lost, or have been bailed out by his intangibles, but I doubt that he would have looked good.

 

I fighter like Rocky who relied so heavily on his condition would be up against it after a 3 years lay off.Ingo could use his legs and back pedal until Rocky tired enough for him to engage.Ingo for me.

 

When you have a back injury it's always tough. Throw in all the other disadvantages and as already stated Marciano knew better

 

It could have turned out like Liston vs Martin.

 

There is not a feat under the yellow sun which he could not accomplish. He may comeback yet and defeat Wilder.

 

Marciano was too far out of shape. When you don't train for 3-4 long years and decide to come back, overcoming injuries, lack of conditioning becomes very hard. He tried to go away for a while and train but quickly realized he just didn't have it anymore.

I have a feeling Rocky was so disappointed with himself during training that he called off a comeback. This makes as much sense as anything. Marciano was a post war fighter not a turn of the 1960s fighter. He would have been too far outside of his late 1940s early 1950s era.

But I have heard a lot of other things too.

I heard during his training for Ingo Rocky knocked out three guys in actual fights behind closed doors. One opponent was said to have been Wayne Bethea. But when word got out that Rocky was coming back Marciano was told in a sit down with boxing figures that he could not continue with his career self managed so he put the kibosh on his own comeback.

No way was he handing over half of his income of all comeback fights to guys representing all the same parasites that owned him last time. he decided he’d rather cut his own nose off to spite his face. He chose not make them a cent. And according to that story this is really why Marciano stayed retired.

He figured he would net equal money making so many public appearances a week as he would with a comeback. So he set himself a high schedule to do this. And that’s what killed him. He was flying all over the place hitchhiking flights for free in single engine planes (to save money) that eventually one of those single engines cut out on him.

 

Marciano gave an interview to Boxing Illustrated,he said the reason his comeback was aborted was because he couldn't get into good enough shape.Never heard about closed door sparring sessions and I would tend to dismiss it as BS especially as it hasn't surfaced before. Only one fighter ever stopped Bethea, Sonny Liston!

This story surfaced in the letters page of boxing news a few months ago. A guy wrote in and said he remembered reading this back in the day and was asking if anybody else remembered reading about Rocky knocking out Bethea. It is worth repeating only for interest sake, who knows if it happened or not? One guy certainly thought so. The story about Rocky being asked to go to a sit down to hear that he would still have to cut in management came straight from Lou Duva. It is in the Jacobs beach book.
