It depends on his back. Marciano got " into shape " for the movie fight with Ali, and that was well past three years retirement. Of course, these were 1 minute filmed action sequences, but Ali came away reasonably impressed and Marciano moved reasonably well.

Ingo wasn't very good, but you'd have to favor him. By staying retired, Rocky preserved his image.

Have you read the recent Johansson book ? I just finished it and was pleasantly surprised .. a good read .. man does the author go to town on the "sainted" D'Amato ... tells a complete other perspective ..

All Marciano did was shed weight, he wasn't "in shape" they pantomimed 1 minute rounds.
Anyone fool enough to draw conclusions from a fake computer fight with pulled punches ,would likely be stupid enough to give a definitive verdict on a fight they had only ever seen highlights of.

As usual, your missing my point. I offered no definite conclusions here and said much depends on Rocky's back.

The point I was trying to make is Marciano vs. Ali super fight was filmed years after Ingo was champion. While it wasn't a real battle, Rocky did not look slow or out of place on film, and of course, if Rocky were training for an actual match would be in even better shape. So the movie film shows us something. Rocky didn't turn into a slug overnight.

Ali who wasn't always kind to older timers had respect for Marciano during the filmed rounds. One time Ali knocked Marciano's toupee off unpurposive, only to be hit with a hard body shot. It just happened once.

Ingo had a below average chin and wasn't hard to hit. So IF Rocky's back was good enough to allow him to train, he could very well win three years removed from the ring.

Even a depleted Marciano, could potentially have landed something big, and sealed the deal.

The very fact that it was likely to turn on this chance, justifies his decision not to try!

    This.

Rocky's conditioning helped make up for limited skills and short arms. Rock just ground his man down.

He made the right call to stay retired

Respect to Rocky for making his decision to retire and above all else for sticking to that decision.

Rocky enjoyed his retirement, he partook of all the things he deprived himself of as a fighter, no way was he going to go back to the spartan life he needed to endure to enable him to fight the style he did, that is of course on top of his back issue.

Rocky Marciano was one of my fav fighters. But if he had returned it would
have been like Jack Johnson vs Jesse Willard like mistake.
Rocky made the wise decision not to return to ring.

Rocky was much tougher than Ingo and took a much better shot but at thirty five after a long layoff it would be tough but if any would have a puncher's chance it would be Rocky in this fight ..

Jack Dempsey turned 78 in 1973........I think he still had something left!

Nice pic of 4 ATG fighters. Lots of history in that pic

Ali did say his arms were sore as hell the next day, so if an old, long retired Rocky was pulling his punches that tells me that a prime Rocky vs a prime Ali would make for a hell of a fight.
