Esteban DeJesus vs Alexis Arguello at lightweight. DeJesus at 5'4-1/2 ".......AA at 5-10". Is AA just too big? Who wins?
Good matchup! I think Arguello would win. He has all the physical advantages - height, reach and power. DeJesus was good enough to go 33 rounds with Duran, though so he'd have some sort of chance. I'm just not sure how he'd overcome the physical disadvantages.
This fight very competitive. Would be fast paced however no magic bottle this time ( Pryor fight ) and Arguello stop De Jesus late.
I wanted this as well. I'll go with the Dejesus via close decision. He has the footwork & mobility & chin to avoid getting clipped with the big homerun shot. Turn him all night & stay away from that lefthook to the body and make alexis chase him. I think at 135, Alexis needs guys that trade or stand in front of him.
Arguello by close decision. DeJesus's gas tank betrays him. On a side note why do people keep saying DeJesus is 5'4"????? Is there a joke I dont get? He looked maybe and inch shorter than 5'7" Duran
Yeah, I tend to think similarly. Arguello had stiffer legs and slower feet at lightweight than the lower weights; easier to turn and force to reset, and he was never Pep-esque even at featherweight despite being discernably fleeter of foot in those earlier days. DeJesus could really counter on the move when he wanted, had genuine finesse in that regard. He could really bang as well, which I think people tend to disregard a bit. No way can Alexis just stalk him with no fear of heavy return fire. Not that I'm saying he would - he had very good boxing skill of his own and obviously that lethal combo of power, timing and accuracy. DeJesus could possibly be vulnerable late over 15, either for a late stoppage or points overhauling maybe aided by a knockdown r two. Arguello stands alongside the likes of Sanchez, Saldivar, Pedroza, Buchanan etc for freakish late rounds stamina whereas DeJesus could flag a bit in comparison similar to someone like Laguna. That though was partially due to him small at the weight and if the pace was quick throughout. It would depend if Arguello could apply enough pressure in the earlier stages to take DeJesus's legs away come the championship rounds. He wasn't Duran in terms of applying frenetic skilled aggression or a physical titan and powerhouse like Cervantes despite having height and reach advantages.
Agreed. But the guy has the tools and the smarts to turn Alexis. And he'd better turn him---guys like Mancini that are right in front of Alexis are in big big trouble. Alexis had a brutal left hook to the body. Not so much to the head, kind of like Hearns. But a guy like Estaban cannot afford to absorb those hooks without losing his legs. I think he does it enough and his underrated boxing skills win the decision in a boxing fans' wonderful fight. Another good potential matchup at lightweight are 2 other guys---Buchanon and his legs and boxing & Nazarov.
Very good posts. Love watch both of these great ring mechanics do there thing. Id go with Arguello also in a very competitive matchup.
I just see Estaban taking a decision, Arguello is not going to pressure him like Duran and empty his tank. DeJesus really knew how to counter and as others have pointed out DeJesus power was good enough to get Arguello's attention for sure. I can see Arguello's face showing some damage at the end of 15
