What if RJJ moved up to fight Rahman after he upset Lewis in 2001? Could Jones become Heavyweight Champion of the World?
why not? Roy giving up a ton of lbs.. but he was still a great boxer in '01 and it's not like Rahman went on a terror after beating Lewis .. I'm taking Roy in a UD
I think Roy could do it. Rahman was certainly not a smart fighter. And a fat James Toney essentially beat Rahman. So would Roy.
Rahman KO. Roy's chin would not hold up, and he doesn't possess the power at HW to crack Rahmans own suspect chin.
Prime Rahman was smart enough to KO a cocky Lewis(ATG), weather the storm against Sanders and outbox Tua X2. The size coupled with Rahmans power and own underrated ability would be too much for Roy to cope with.
If you think That a fragile ***** like jones would survive against a Monster like rahman you have serious delusions
James toney had around 25 times better chin than jones and could carry the weight much better at hw. Toney was much better hw than Jones.the Toney that did beat evander beats the crap of jones at hw
Ruiz beat Rahman without problems in a stinker, and Jones dominated Ruiz. But styles make fights. I see it two ways: either Jones outboxes Rahman from distance and wins like vs Ruiz, or Rahman catches him (one punch would be enough) and KO's Roy.
You are giving Rahman far too much credit. He was KO'd twice by Oleg Maskaev, and went life and death with clubfighter Obed Sullivan. Absent one fortunate KO over a dreadfully undertrained Lennox Lewis, there is very little on Rahman's resume to make him a favorite over a smaller, but, infinitely more skilled ATG like Roy Jones. Roy wouldn't try to slug it out with, Rahman. He would use his extraordinary advantage in hand and foot speed to make Rahman look plain silly without taking any undue risks. For the record, I would pick a great number of light heavyweights to beat the plodding Rahman (Spinks, Moore, Maxim, Loughran, Conn, Braxton, etc.) And I would pick a 190 pound Jack Dempsey to blast Rahman out of the ring in one or two rounds. Size isn't everything. Not when there is an enormous gulf in skill level.
Before Ramhan and Toney fought for the WBC title, it was held up on this forum as a test of whether the old timers such as Charles and Moore, could beat the modern sized guys on skill. Most people on this forum argued that Ramhan should have got the decision. Elephants do not forget!
Rahman was one of the strongest heavyweights of all time, size difference is just too big. Rahman could literally bring his hands up, bite the mouthpiece and walk him down, easily manhandle Jones in the clinch and knock him out cold with one punch.
