Sorry, this is old, but I don't remember seeing a thread on it here. (not that I blame the forum at large for not paying this nonsense any mind)

From a Fat Dan article that ran six weeks ago:

It remains to be seen whether Oscar De La Hoya is truly serious, but he said Monday he has been "secretly training" and called out UFC star Conor McGregor for his comeback fight after nearly a decade in retirement.

"You know I'm competitive," De La Hoya said. "I still have it in me. I've been secretly training, secretly training. I'm faster than ever and stronger than ever. I know I can take out Conor McGregor in two rounds. I'll come back for that fight. Two rounds. Just one more [fight]. I'm calling him out. Two rounds, that's all I need. That's all I'm going to say. You heard it on Golden Boy Radio. Two rounds, that's all I need."

    ...

"I don't want to speak for him, but he's in shape and I'm sure he has been thinking about it," Eric Gomez, De La Hoya's best friend since childhood and president of Golden Boy Promotions, told ESPN of a possible De La Hoya comeback. "The itch is there, has been for a long time."

Another person close to De La Hoya told ESPN that De La Hoya is in fact seriously considering a return to the ring, even if it's not to fight McGregor.

De La Hoya said if somehow a fight with McGregor could be made, it would be as a boxing match. De La Hoya said he has no intention of going into the cage for an MMA bout.

"Let's get it straight: In the cage, he would freaking destroy me. He would freaking destroy me. Only in the ring," De La Hoya said.

"I've been working out for the last five months. [My confidence] is how I feel now from my training. I don't know what it is, but I'll tell you now that I've never felt so good before in my life."

Raise your hand if you would tune in for this (and lose a little respect for yourself in the process )

I would always tune in to see a MMA fighter get destroyed by a boxer.

    I'll definitely tune in.
I've seen all Oscar's fights so not gonna make an exception for this.
Also, on paper this is less of a mismatch than Floyd-McGregor although I've a feeling Oscar's left hook will put McGregor on a stretcher.

I'd think it would be a mismatch in the other direction, no? McGregor was able to actually hang Mayweather somewhat for a few rounds, and ODLH has been out for a decade, getting fat and doing blow.

This would be like a fight right now (in the boxing ring, but still) between George St. Pierre and Joe Calzaghe.

That's a possibility, the only way McGregor is going to win is if he manages to tie up Oscar and keep turning him and makes him tired, but I don't think McGregor has a boxing stamina to go after 6.
Once Oscar's jab connect, I don't think McGregor would know what hit him next lol.

Many made threads about this but they got wastelanded.

McCraiger by savage KO. Oscar don't got Floyd's chin

Ah, my overzealous fellow mods, probably, with the best of intentions but still misguided (in wanting to keep the General Forum devoid of MMA talk, even though Conor does now have a BoxRec page, a debut under his belt, and perhaps a sophomore effort in 2018 yet to be negotiated...time will tell)

I feel like at this point McGregor vs. [insert boxer] threads, within reason, should no longer be lumped in with hypothetical matchups involving just anyone from MMA (that hasn't made the actual crossover already)

I'm having a really hard time visualizing this. Has anyone seen pics of the supposedly "in shape" Oscar after "5 months of secret training"?

If Oscar wants a comeback fight then I'd pay large to see Oscar Vs Canelo.

Why is McGregor the go-to guy for these silly match-ups? I think even now De La Hoya would grind Mac down in eight rounds, but what would that prove anyway? I'd much rather see DLH come back to fight, off the top of my head, Shane Mosley. Or any other actual boxer. ****ing George Foreman, why not? Just as arbitary, just as pointless, would prove just as little. Connor had his go, made the money, and now needs to focus on the sport he's good at. A rematch with Nate Diaz is five times more interesting than McGregor vs. any boxer in the world. And I don't care who Oscar De La Hoya can or can't beat a whole decade after his retirement.
