Why do Marciano fans attempt to downplay Liston & Foreman?

Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by BlackCloud, Dec 29, 2017.

Justified concerns?

  1. Both must be downgraded to increase Rockys stock

    52.4%
  2. Pure coincidence with no bearing on hypothetical match

    28.6%
  3. Can't decide

    19.0%

I totally agree with the thread. The tyson fans are obssesed saying that david tua was a complete bum and now you have the answer here.

Who says Tua was a complete bum?

I don’t think it is necessarily downplaying a fighter to point out shortcomings. What are we to do? Pretend everyone was invincible?

Every poster on this forum downplays fighters.

    All of them.

    So this is more strawman.

What i have noticed by a few on here is to over enthuse on most of those that Marciano did beat and attempt to undercut opponents of both Liston & Foreman and to me that is a subliminal attempt to raise Rockys stock.
Bummy Davis was probably the worst offender for this tactic.

It’s not difficult to undercut some opponents is it? Every great fighter has lousy opponents on their resume. All of them.

If I mentioned graveyard walters, baby booze or Terry sorrel or Joe Murphy Gordwin I get called a hater... go figure.

I liked Bummy Davis. What happened to him?

I find Marciano to be a fantastic study in fighting excellence, one of the most unique and uniquely gifted fighters to ever enter the ring... but his modern day fan club really sets the bar high for ludicrous.

I've noticed a lot of the guys on this forum who attempt to downplay Ted Gullick also are huge fans of Don Mogard.

At first, i thought perhaps this was some sort of extension of Marciano-nuthuggery but then I realized Gullick's style represents them absolute worst nightmare for Mogard and that Gullick would 100% be able to expose Mogard as a spoiler with a suspect chin who was carefully matched against a few styles he could spoil his way to the final bell against.

Every honest boxing fan knows deep down that Gullick would obliterated Mogard in 2 rounds or less, and that irks the Mogard hardcore. Gullick is downplayed at every opportunity by the Mogard-huggers, in threads where Mogard isn't even mentioned.
    It's become obvious now.

Don't get me wrong, I like Mogard as much as anyone here but it's just silly to pretend Ted Gullick's bogeyman abilities didn't exist or try to downplay everything about him, out of some insecurity.

    Styles make fights.

I remember years ago this guy bummy davis saying one of the worst shi7s that i ever have seen on this forum.

    Garbage number 1.
"Marciano beats prime foreman because the 5'6 qawi landed shots on foreman"
So according to him marciano would beat foreman prime vs prime because "qawi landed some shots" on old foreman... What a trash argument
    Garbage number 2.

"The worst styles for foreman were durable stylists AND DURABLE PRESSURE FIGHTERS" again mentioning qawi...
And this guy was a terrible terrible foreman hater.the worst type of hater.. The Classic one that says "i am a foreman fan" lmao but curiously you could not find a post from him picking foreman to win any fantasy fight... The guy would be capable to argue that foreman did beat Norton but yeah.. He was a foreman fan just like choklab is lol

All these heavyweight discussions : It's kind of impossible to downplay a lot of these bums.
Even if I tried to downplay some of them I couldn't. It's difficult to make them seem worse than they actually were. Just big dumb bruisers. Bums, I call 'em.

George Foreman was actually good though. His opponents were mostly bums but Big George was a serious menace.
I'm a Marciano fan too, but he was too small really.

Liston's 84-inch reach is bullsh!t though. And he quit like a bum against Clay. He'd smash Marciano probably. But I'm totally deciding to downplay his 84-inch reach. His arms looked long as fook, to be sure. Freaky long. But eighty-four at his height ?
    Nah ... I'mma downplay it.

On paper both Liston and Foreman are nightmare matchups for Marciano. Bigger men facing a smaller swarmer type is not a favorable matchup for the swarmer. With Foreman we have good evidence of what happens (Frazier) but Frazier was past prime and arguably not as good as Marciano.
Liston while arguably a better fighter than both Foreman and Marciano lacked their heart, not to say he didn't have heart but it doesn't quite measure up to the legendary toughness of Marciano or Foreman.
I think all people have fighters they are fans of, and sometimes get defensive if other fans of the sport pick the fighters they like over "their" guys. For Marciano this back and forth gets extreme because he has an undefeated record backing him while he has diminutive dimensions against modern sized fighters against him.
While I would not favor him against either man (and I see no chance for him against the Wlad's and Lewis's of the sport) I wouldn't rule out a surprise. He was good enough to pull the upset. If every larger man won every fight the sport would be boring.
Resume wise, his resume stakcks up well with both guys.

I think a great thread would be taking a look at the worst bums each champion fought. For Marciano I will put forward Mcveys personal favorite Marciano opponent Humphrey Jackson the 254lb powerhouse.

For George Foreman we can include the hapless joe Murphy Gordwin who won his first fight then was counted out in all but two of his remaining fights over the next 12 years.

Sonnys nominations could go to Willis Earls or Ponce de Leon.

I believe I've only ever mentioned Jackson once, and that was in response to some idiot saying beating him was proof Marciano could handle super heavyweights! The idiot's name will remain a secret, I don't want to embarrass him! Foreman and Liston's early opposition stack up very well against Marciano's,very well!
