Great match up with two legendary men. I think it would be similar to Frazier bonavena except that dempsey was overall better and not flat footed. I think this fight comes down to who has the better firepower and chin, and that man is jack dempsey, but Frazier was an absolute beast and wouldn't lose by a large margin. I'd give Dempsey an advantage in power, chin, reach, he can use both his hands, and footwork. Joe's only advantage would be the best left hook in boxing history, which does count for alot. Dempsey by k.o. before round 5
Good posting! I differ in that I don't think Joe's left hook was better, it was different then Jacks. Joe could wing his in triples to the head and body and it most often had a breaking and wearing down affect while Jack's iron man left hook was thrown with the arm rock hard and landing could put a man out cold or drop him like a rock. Sorry I can't see any similarities with the Bonavena goes, Jack had everything Oscar didn't. For me its how long this bout would last, Jack wouldn't have any trouble landing his right hand early on like Quarry did in his '67 fight with Frazier and I think Jack hit quite abit harder then Jerry. Hurt early and maybe dropped Joe only succumbed to big George's power and I see him surviving and if one of them would get gassed it would be Jack. In a 12 rounder I think it could go the distance with Joe taking a close one.
frazier. dempsey had great power but too many weaknesses to exploit. titanic battle though, both come out with losses of a sort in the battering they take and unwillingness to back down.
Who has actually seen Dempsey's left hook other then on grainy very old film (And it didn't look that impressive on it.) And what sports writers and trainers of that era said in print. Men who probably wasn't around to even see a Joe Frazier and his signature left hook because they were likely dead . Does anyone here realize that Dempsey's best yrs were almost a 100 yrs ago? Give me what I know to be true than what has been passed down and mythologize. Frazier would destroy Dempsey. And any fighter of that era.
I see Dempsey starting fast and knocking Frazier down a handful of times. Frazier was never actually knocked out though and was only stopped after 6 knock downs against Foreman and a 15th round corner stoppage against Ali. I think Frazier can last long enough to start smoking against Dempsey who is worn out after his fast start. Frazier can pile up enough rounds to take a decision.
Frazier by a knock out or TKO. I don' think Babe Ruth could hit Roger Clemens either. Much of Dempsey's legend is built on myth.
Let's just say that in my opinion Frazier would have cut an absolute swathe through Dempsey's opponents that the Manassa Mauler faced at the championship level. Can anyone imagine a prime Frazier fighting Brennan, Carpentier , Tommy Gibbons and Tunney ( no 180 pound mover beats Frazier ) . For such a supposed great swarmer Dempsey seemed to have all kinds of trouble putting away anyone who had good boxing skills. The guy never fought a black fighter either. I find Dempsey to be a great story in typical roaring twenties style but I cannot get too excited about him as a fighter, especially if he had to face someone like Frazier who had an incredibly big motor, incredible self belief and much, much better record against world class opponents than Dempsey. In my view its Frazier as the winner KO 5.
His left hook against Firpo, Willard, Sharkey, and Tunney is all thrown and shown clear in film. In his book How to Box he taught how he threw the punch to the head and also his "shovel hooks" as he called them to the body. Against a hurt opponent Jack could wing wide powerful left hooks but his signature was a short one in close where he turned everything into it and tightened the entire arm hard before impact, it was explosive and had ko written all over it.
