Did Tyson do the right thing by not taking the rematch with Lewis in 2003?

According to his autobiography, he mentions that he had so many problems and distractions in his life at that time i.e. bankruptcy, divorce and other things that he was just not able to properly train.

In the post fight interviews he mentioned that Lewis was a masterful boxer and that if he continued fighting like he did he could never beat him.

But in the Undisputed 2013 autobiography he mentions that "If he could properly focus and get in proper shape he could kick his ass".

I struggle to fathom how could that version of Tyson in 2002-03 beat Lewis, i mean that version of Tyson struggled badly against Williams and Mcbride and in my view that version of Tyson would have still been bull dozed by Lewis.

But if the rematch took place, what kind of adjustments would Tyson need to make to put on a better show?

The things which come to my mind are coming in around 215-216 which is his best fighting weight. Training very hard in the gym but apart from that i find it impossible to believe he could have really turned the clock, he could not have any answers at that stage in his career to the tactics which Lewis used i.e.

Uppercutting and punching him whenever he came in close

Using his weight and pushing him around in the ring whenever he came in close

Jabbing him in the face and moving around from a distance

He would have been able to make another $20 million from the rematch which could have helped settle his debts significantly but he decided to forgo it for reputation purposes.

The only thing that would have given Tyson a chance in a rematch would be a time machine to about 88 when he was champion and Lewis was in the vest and headgear. 2003 he has no chance

What a joke. The guy was a professional fighter. That was his job, to train and fight.

Tyson in his prime would knock lennox out. The version lennox fought had no hand speed, movement, or ability to dodge or even block unless it was his face. The only thing Tyson had going for him at that point was his skill and knock out power. If Tyson fought lennox in a rematch he'd been knocked out in round one.

I doubt think that he could have done any batter in a rematch, at this stage of his career.

It was just a question of whether it was worth doing it for another big pay day.

The smart move might have bee to take a fight with Roy Jones when it was offered.

Of course he was silly, he missed an opportunity to earn a big payday.

He took a terrible beating the first time. Lewis would have stopped him faster the second time

Tyson knew he didn't deserve a rematch with Lewis.

He knew that, but it did not stop him for begging for one during the post fight interview. It was sad really, since he was not begging for a chance to improve the result. He was just asking for a good payday.

He would just have accepted an unnecessary beating. He was shot for the first fight so the second fight would have been just as bad or worse for him.

Perhaps it would have been better if he had called it a day after that, and spared himself the humiliation of losing to Williams and McBride.

Better still, retire after the Golotta fight, which would have been a nice not to go out on, if he hadn't messed up with the drugs test.

people round here really hate Tyson lol

you ask one question about the guy and they cant help getting the laundry list out :clapclap:

he was only there for the cash I think against Lewis but the whole thing was still a bizarre contradiction. he wanted the pay day by he also appeared to be trying to get out of the fight. the pre fight antics of his were very risky considering he was banned from nearly every state, yet he decided to start a brawl and explain he wanted the **** a man on live TV. odd to say the least. As a fan I was very glad he showed some class in defeat. a very odd, pointless event. Tyson was never beating Lewis without his prime armoury, which was stripped down to an inept lump by 2003, even then it not a given he would win.

Why were other fighters able to last more than a round against a prime Tyson if Lewis couldn`t his chin wasn`t that weak the guys that survived longer against Mike wouldn`t be able to take the shots that McCall and Rahman knocked Lewis out with outside of Tucker who may have even beaten Lewis, none of Tyson`s other prime opponents could have beat Lewis and they certainly didn`t have his power the only opponent that Tyson fought with Lewis`s reach (in fact longer) was Douglas but I don`t include that because you are talking about prime Tyson who was awesome, but one round!
