I honestly feel Ruben Olivares might be one of the more under appreciated fighters of all time, especially considering what high regard he used to be held in (From everything I've watched and read on the man)

I've read more than one articles where Olivares was considered a shoe in for the greatest Mexican fighter of all time..... until Chavez came along!

I think people being star struck by JC Superstar was a very real thing, and some of that initial shine that was there when he was undefeated are of course gone.

Now that the dust has settled, quite frankly I don't think he's any greater a fighter than Olivares, if better at all....

Personally, he'd be one of the first names to come to mind, were the question about overrated fighters

I don't see how he did that much in his relatively short career. To me he needed a few more years of big wins for a decent legacy. He stopped too early.

Alberto Davila. Hardly anyone ever mentions him and is becoming highly underrated. Had a nice, clean, aesthetically pleasing style along with a ton of heart despite not having power and was short in stature. Very crafty and wily. A shame that people have forgotten about Tweety.

The list is endless. I feel a bit sad Jeff Chandler and Lupe Pintor (from my era) don't get talked much nowadays. Both were concurrent pretty long term champs and it's a shame they didn't have their own Superfight because if they did i think they'd be talked about more often.

Chandler i'd pretty much put in the boxer/puncher category, he was a very talented fighter. Pintor had that Mexican toughness and superb left hook. Between them they made about 17 defenses of their titles, pretty impressive. Pintor won his title via robbery over Zarate but a short time later made good strides as a fighter and ended up extremely good. He didn't lose his title before stepping up in an all time great fight vs Gomez. Chandler aged overnight and put in an eerily poor performance against Sandoval. He suffered a detached retina and just had nothing on the night and it came out of no-where. Never fought again.

If someone described either as slipping into the lower end of "great" i would raise my glass.

This is a great post. Kudos.

Anyone else come to mind from fairly recent times?

That's why we make threads and attempt to discuss it, to flex the gray matter and try to get some creative thinking going on.
