Had a discussion on this the other day. I know that Baer was credited with two, but one was kinda sketchy Saw the fight Mancini/Kim.. poor guys head hit a ring rope on the way down It's said Kovalev fought a guy in Russia, who died shortly after. Any more that can be substantiated? Seems to be pretty rare (and damned unfortunate)
Frankie Campbell died after loss to Baer. The other fighter, Ernie Schaff suffered what would have been a hard knockout against Baer, but recovered and fought three times before dying following a loss to Carnera. The fact that those fights took place not too long after the Baer KO probably didn't help his cause, though. Kovalev stopped fellow Russian prospect Roman Simakov when he was coming up; fight should have been stopped sooner and medical treatment of Simakov was virtually non-existent.
This will give you a pretty comprehensive start - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_deaths_due_to_injuries_sustained_in_boxing
Ernie shcaff had cronic headaches after the baer fight, he did fight after that which definitely didn't help, but ended up dying from a jab from carnera that couldn't break a potatoe chip. Baer didn' technically kill Ernie but he did give him brain damage that helped cause his death.
VERY extensive, and surprisingly long. I'd bet that many of the earliest examples were due to the primitive state of medicine, the habit of taking fighters post-fight to pubs, and the general belief that if a fighter could stand, he was "up to scratch". That list ought to be a sticky, to commemorate.. Thanx!
You're welcome. A lot of unpleasant reading in there... and if you look under 30-Oct 1946, it gets downright eerie!
Too bad it hasn’t been updated; for example, the Kovalev fight, or anything after 2007, is not listed.
The first tragic fight I saw live on TV was the Kid Paret vs Griffith fight. Skimming down the list I have seen live on TV about 10 more tragedies (through 2007).
