Just finished watching Tyson-Bruno 1 from 1989.... And Bruno was pretty game in this fight. Tyson looked extremely wild and extremely sloppy. It's one of Tyson's worst performances.Tyson looked extremely beatable in this fight. I believe had Tokyo Douglas been in the ring with Tyson from this fight, Tyson would've been knocked out sooner. But looking back in hindsight.... Tyson's downfall was pretty much inevitable.... (With all due respect to Tyson, who is one of my favorite fighters). Question: From his first fight with Bruno, Could you see the writings on the wall as far as him heading for a fall?

In hindsight, okay. But at the time ? No.
People knew Tyson looked sloppy in that fight and they knew about everything that was going on outside the ring, and he was coming off his longest lay-off since turning professional as well as a broken hand. And he still beat the hell out of Bruno, let's face it.
His very next fight, he stopped Carl Williams in 93 seconds. Carl Wiliams was rated a lot higher than Frank Bruno at that time. Carl Williams was actually rated as the true #1 contender by most boxing publications, above Holyfield even.

Bruno just never had the chin to beat Tyson. Mike could be sloppy and all that but all he has to do is land a good shot and that's it. Bruno had no margin for error.

Well Bruno put in a better effort than Tyson's previous fight against Spinks and as has been mentioned his next fight against Williams.
Looking back Tyson was still a pretty formidable fighter when he fought Bruno!

I've always thought that the Bruno ft was the one that put the seeds of doubt in Tyson s mind. Tyson was glad to get that fight over and done with, he knew he was sloppy and crap in there.
I think Tyson knew a more mobile, Robust confident fighter other than Bruno would have beaten him that night. Whatever he thought of Frank, he suddenly realised that not all heavy s were going out straight away and I believe Tyson knew from that fight on not all opponents were going to comply with him.

That scenario begs the question of why he would come into the Douglas fight at anything under 100%?

Who knows John, with Tyson s mind? Perhaps he did come in with confidence but as soon as he realised Douglas was there to actually win, that's when the self doubts kicked in. And buster had advantages over Bruno, more mobile less stiff. The will to win, not just survive. Those doubts from the Bruno fight may have flooded his mind. That's just my take on it anyway.

Bruno didnt have the speed and stamina. Wasnt his chin tht was the problem. He took more clean hard shots off tyson in both fights before being stopped than holyfield, douglas and Lewis.

It's funny how Sugar Ray Leonard said it was Tyson's best performance up to press, he beat a big and powerful contender in devastating style.

It wasn't Tyson's worst performance by any means. I think he looked a bit sloppy but that was probably largely due to Bruno's ridiculous neck-grabbing tactics. Tyson unleashed some of his best combinations in this fight.
The lay-off probably effected Tyson a bit but Bruno had been of twice as long, so he's got that excuse too.

Tyson is the only fighter to have actually dominated Bruno without him tiring out, how about we start there.....

Even Lennox was behind on points after 6 rounds which was also a rarity in his career against Bruno.

Bruno had to hold on for dear life against Tyson to even last past the first round , he used this tactic in every round and tried the hold and hit but in the end Tyson got him sooner than later.

People just can't grasp that Tyson always got up when fighting power punchers too bad more weren't around in the 80's when he actually did dedicate 100% to his craft. Of course the less knowledgeables detract him anyway even in lopsided fights...go figure? Smh

Going into this fight Tyson prior he had broke his hand on Mitch Greens head and had legal battles with Bill Cayton which caused afew postponements. I would say with all this going on Tyson did o.k.

Without Rooney for the first time and having never been out of the ring for more than 3 months, he had been out for 8 months for this one, he had a lot that should have threw him off more but his determination to pummel Bruno was obviously present that night.

So much focus is always placed on Tyson and how he didnt fight perfect and not the opponents themselves unlike other past time greats...haters going to hate.....keep hating.....lol

He almost finished Bruno in the FIRST minute / minutes of the 1st round. :eeeeek:

Your thread title and question at the end are different:

    - No, Bruno could not have beaten Tyson.

He did not have the stamina or chin to do so

    - No, the writing was not on the wall

Yes, Tyson looked less impressive than previous fights.

But, nobody thought there was someone out there, least of which Douglas, to put in a ATG performance like Buster put in to dethrone Tyson.

Holyfield was seen as a small HW who liked to slug at that time and he wasn't going to outslug Tyson. He had a Very hard fight with a faded Dokes. After Tyson/Bruno and Holyfield/Dokes, nobody was saying Holyfield was a threat to Tyson.

Williams was a good boxer but his chin issues were well established.

Buster was seen as a decent boxer with little stamina or heart after he gassed and appeared to quit against Tony Tucker.

It was a total shock when Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson.

Nah, Bruno deep down was always intimidated against a formidable opponent, lacked the killer instinct to really hurt guys and finish them off in devastating fashion.
