I remember watching the "fight that didn't happen" too. Rossman was in the ring. ABC was broadcasting the fight live. And Galindez simply wouldn't come out of the dressing room. It was weird. I don't know if it had ever happened before for a televised fight - with one guy in the ring and the other just refusing to come out. Same thing sort of happened with the Spinks-Eddie Mustafa rematch. Eddie came in overweight. The weigh in was a couple hours before the broadcast began. The title wouldn't be on the line. Eddie said he'd agree to a non-title fight. Or a 10-rounder. Spinks said he put in the work and Eddie didn't. He wasn't going to cut Eddie any slack. There was a big argument. HBO filmed it all. Since there was no internet back then, we all tuned in to watch the rematch on HBO that night, and they just showed a few minutes of footage of all the arguing ... said sorry there wouldn't be a fight tonight ... then showed a movie instead.
Geeze, I share both of their fights (both undeniable classics) and bring some good discussion to the forum and still haven't gotten a single like on my original post. Classic forums survey says... quality content be damned, we don't give a ****.
So besides Rossman, Saad, Lopez, Galindez, Johnson, Conteh, Qawi, Eddie Mustafa.... where there any other big names from the era that warrant mention? Or even obscure, B grade guys that were still always worth a watch? I know Mwale has some real quality wins but was kind of a dark horse, kind of like Kalule I suppose.... I'm trying to watch as much as I can, the era has me captivated...
Another point re: Galindez....which most everyone knows, after getting cut so much, he changed his style from total aggressor, to more of a counter puncher, and still remained at the top of the Division.
From his form in nearly clubbing Len Hutchins to death, caveman style in winning the WBA title, it was a 180 degree transformation in style.
One of the top light heavies of the late 70s-early 80s. Exciting, high-action fighter during his prime. Battered Yacqui Lopez and bested Eddie Mustapha Muhammad. All of his fights took place at Rahway State Prison, where he was incarcerated, so the youtube videos of some of his fights have some cool "bonus" material (pre-fight and in some instances between rounds). https://streamable.com/hkda https://streamable.com/buse
Dwight Braxton (W) & James Scott tangled, and who can't forget Jerry ("The Bull") Martin....another James Scott opponent.
Bump for @George Crowcroft Just watched Rossman-Galindez 1 and looking forward to some more classic 70s light heavyweight battles.
