The rest of the Mailer quote is telling: "Ali looked into himself and said, this is the moment you've been waiting for; do you have the guts? And he kind of nodded to himself, like 'you've got to get it together.' He nodded some more, then turned to the crowd and yelled, 'Ali, Bomaye!"

If there was any fear, it was momentary; when he came out for the second round, he was ready for the storm. He was going to win.

I don't know about that, I thought Liston had him shook also. And if what legend say has any truth to it, his B.P was so high after an encounter with Liston, a doctor was considering not allowing the fight to happen. I read that years ago, don't remember the exact details.

Ali was playing and joking about liston all the fight .ali never showed any fear of any fighter before or after foreman. So stop inventing histories.foreman was a harder match for ali. Liston could not cut the ring like foreman did, george was much harder to outbox

So I'm guessing you've read or know obviously every story that's been written over the past 50 or so yrs, in all the different boxing publications to assume I'm making up a story. In one of the many boxing publications Iv'e read, over the 40 plus yrs plus I've loved the fight game I read that article in one of them. Which publication I don't remember. Which writer, I don't remember but it was a story that was out their yrs ago. By the way, only a liar assumes everyone else is lying, or as you say, "inventing histories" .

Hauser mentions it in his book, "Muhammad Ali" - during the prefight physical, he was acting pretty wild and hysterical; whether it was fear or hype, I don't think anyone can really know except him. The doc measured his pulse at 110 beats per minute, compared to his normal 54. There was a suggestion that the fight might be called off if it stayed that way, but when the doc remeasured it in Ali's room an hour later, it was back to normal. Again, who's to say what was really going through his mind at the time? But one reported noted that, in the middle of Ali's antics, he turned quickly to Sugar Ray Robinson and winked ...

Ali certainly feared and revered Liston. But there was no fighter he revered as much as Foreman. For the rest of his life he had a special admiration and/or respect for Foreman.

I didn't say you lied about anything. If you had common sense, you would understand the meaning of that comment I made about liars assuming everyone else is lying . But sense you don't understand, you've answered my question, nothing else needs to be said. Have a great day.

What some hear don't seem to understand is every man unless he's a total psychopath or insane has fear, EVEN ALI!!! If a man has ever been in a violent situation be it a street fight, war, sparring , boxing, ufc football etc. Their is always fear somewhere in your mind. It's the way one deals with it that separates the brave men from the cowards. Saying Ali had fear of a Liston , or Foreman or anyone else for that matter is more credit to him than a disservice because he always dealt with his fears appropriately . Unlike M.Tyson who bit off ears or tried to break arms. Tyson didn't handle his fear appropriately.
