After the Ellis 'loss' Floyd took two years off before beginning his final comeback. Many posters over the years have said they saw Ringo as a clear victor in that fight. Patterson amassed some victories over, shall we say, less than top flight fighters during his comeback, not to mention Devil Green's head butt and his rubbing against Floyd's eye worsening it in his first fight back. But...he was winning and ironing out the rust from his inactivity. He always wanted Ali one last time But had to defeat a viable contender to warrant that fight. I watched Ringo-Floyd a few days ago (twice) and, IMO, he simply outworked Bonavena in route to a UD. Much like his outworking Chuvalo back in 65, though not quite as impressive against Oscar due to his age (37) at the time.
Sidebar: Always liked tough George but he wore me out with all his 'whiney boy' excuses in virtually every fight he lost.
Back to thread: My subjective scoring? It was Oscar getting the advantage early on and Floyd coming on in the later rounds (God bless my hero, still full of scrap!)
    Rounds scoring? 5-3-2 Patterson.
Points scoring? 96-95 Patterson (due to the 5th? round 'flash' KD)
Feel free to disagree. My somewhat limited $0.02.

Jowcol, I scored this fight sometime back. Can't say your score is bad because it was a tight fight. Here was what I wrote:

The 1972 Patterson-Bonavena fight here. Rough fight on the scorer because Patterson throws sharp punches, but just not very many. Understandable at 37. Bonavena actually fights a controlled fight with Gil Clancy in the corner and most of his work is done with his typical wildman pummeling on the inside. Anyways, here we go.

Round 1: Even (not much is done)
    Round 2: Even (ditto)
    Round 3: Bonavena
Round 4: Bonavena (Oscar scores a knockdown)
    Round 5: Bonavena
    Round 6: Patterson
    Round 7: Bonavena
Round 8: Patterson (very close-if anyone scores this even or for Bonavena I wouldn't blink an eye)
    Round 9: Patterson
    Round 10: Patterson

Now, this is scored on NY rules which is simply a rounds basis, which my card is obviously 4-4-2 a draw. However, NY also employs the supplemental system in the event of a draw, which allows me to score the fight 5-4 in Bonavena's favor due to the 4th round knockdown.

Thanks scar for your analysis and breakdown. We pretty much scored it the same with little difference:
I gave Floyd the 1st and Ringo the 2nd.
It's round(s) 5 & 7 that puts us at odds. Those were the two that I scored Even.
I saw (for lack of a better explanation) several of Oscar's body shots landing as a result of his holding, bully boy tactics along with an obvious bias for "The Great Floyd". :)

P.S.: the KD was flash, 'pitty pat'. :)

Thanks Pard,...and no surprise, but I agree with you on all your observations, including the whiney, sore loser Chuvalo....Oscar Ringo Bonavena, on the other hand was a big favorite of mine,...even over Jerry Quarry most of the time....but he didn't do enough to beat our guy Floyd P. The kd was legit, but a classic, inconsequential "flash" variety, and didn't do a thing to deter Floyd at all. A closer fight than with Chuvalo, ....and a well deserved win...ala the Quarry and Ellis bouts....so add another $0.02 to the ante boys.

I liked the fighter Bonavena too.....but thought Floyd slightly edged it out when I saw it on TV....back in the Olden Days.

Not! The "Crimson Hooded Serpent" and I would utilize our 'peek-a-boo' styles collectively and leave you, in the words of Howard C., "a bloody, pulpy, mess! :) :)
Might need the both of us though to get the job done; you're slick and illusive and would play the judges like trained bears!!
